I think it is actually a great picture because of this. It brings out the brown eyes as point of focus and then you can start roaming the photo discovering all the faint, subtle and beautiful color shades. Together with the sharpness and technical quality of the pic, this makes a captivating animal portrait. Best regards, Jörg

Wonderful Photograph JT, Great Colors and Awesome Clarity. Very well presented. I feel it would be better if some of the blurred area on the left was cropped... But that's my opinion.

The darkened stage makes automatically elevates this photo. I like the presence of both the sharp face and the motion-blurred hand.

The key to photography like this is not spooking the animal. I kept a safe distance and basically stayed on a road that was nearby. He was very aware of my presence. I believe most accidents involving this animal are of people approaching too close and/or spooking them.
On several occasions he looked over at me to check me out... again, it was a very peaceful, comfortable encounter for both parties... until, of course, the 100 people showed up. :-)

Thanks.. I wouldn't do this type of photography without some "reach"... the lens used was a 400mm on my 1.6x crop camera... so it was at an effective focal length of about 640mm... so I was far enough away not to bother him.
Of course, as is often the case in Yellowstone, once people noticed me... .there was a crowd of about 100 people within 15 minutes...
