Thank you for your comment & opinion Yahya. I think you are right about this affect being good for a low-sun shot. Regards, Steve

Thanks Marcus. I've been idle for a few months, forgive me. I need to work my way back through your images, which I'm sure will blow me away!! Regards, Steve.

Cracking composition, once again Robert. Image has great balance. I can't decide whether I want the tree to be just a tad more bold to make it a stronger feature or not?? Hmm...

Great image.

An absolute stunner. Great composition, the foreground gives the background its true scale. I hope this wins an award for you! My only very minor change might be to sharpen the trees in the foreground a little, just to pull them further into the foreground? A 7 from me without hesitation.

Regards, Steve.

Thanks for the comment Kate, I agree flowers are difficult to 'do' differently unless you are a Photoshop master (which I'm not!).

I've wanted to get a surface tension shot like this for a long time & never managed it. Beautiful work.

Absolutely stunning, Marcus. I think you must have the least light-hungry 20D of the batch. 1/2000, F8 @ ISO 200 with a dark background? I would be lucky to get 1/400 under these conditions & settings. How do you do it?!
Cheers, Steve.

Hehe, OK I get it now. My title referred to the Hendrix lyric. Now I think you're about the right age to appreciate (or is it disapprove of?!!) that?

I'm not too bad, thanks. Work is really tiring me out & not giving me any time for photography, hence I'm reduced to decapitating irises after work & pegging them to the washing line! Still, only 10,179 days to retirement. You could work out my birthday from that!!

Have a great weekend Den & my best to Margaret,
Regards
Steve.

Superb image Darrell. Having read your bio & seen how much experience you have I don't feel qualified to attempt a critique on your photos, which I've had a browse through. You have a great eye & if I can approach your standard someday I will be very, very happy.

One thing that irritates me about usefilm is how few comments you seem to get, when you post images of such high quality, imagination & beauty, which get so many views.... I just don't understand it!

Thank you for commenting on & ID'ing the Puma 'copter for me.

Regards
Steve.

Perfect DOF here Gregory. An area in which I suffer very badly. Which focussing mode do you use with the 20D? Do you use centre-point, 9-point... or what. Would value your experience!

Steve.

Lost for words Marcus. You deserve the award!

Is that a new lens, the 400mm? It's a peach!! F2.8 or F4?

I think you are right - thank you VERY much for taking the time to investigate!!

Blind luck, Den. I saw him sunning himself on the lawn & went out to investigate, I'd left the washing on the line from the night before (naughty boy!), so I crept up behind the duvet cover (!) to get within 20 feet as he hopped up into my catalpa. Thankfully it's a bit slow to 'leave', so there was a view through, and the sun caught him perfectly. Divine intervention perhaps? I have plenty of bad luck too, so maybe this was the yang after the ying!!??

A good excuse to leave the washing out though!!
Cheers
Steve.

Hi Leslie, yes this was hand-held. It was a bit windy, so the flower-head is a bit bent-over here.

I'm really happy with the 17-40L, I bought it for landscapes & it is really sharp at 17mm, a bit less so at 40mm. I borrowed a friends 16-35mm L, which is twice the price over here, and that seemed sharp at 35mm end but less so at 16mm. The 17-40 also seemed to resist lens-flare a bit better too, so it was a no-brainer for me. I guess people buy the 16-35 for indoors architecture where the F2.8 means you can use hand-held, where the F4 17-40 would need a tripod.

If you want I'll send you an original full-size jpeg of a landscape so you can have a look at it? My email is tommorules@ntlworld.com .

Regards
Steve.

Thanks Leslie, I've subsequently discovered this is a baby robin, not a dunnock - a European robin, that is, different to yours. Interesting how the red breast feathers only develop after a few months. Regards, Steve.

Hi Phillip, I'm glad I read your comments or I might have missed the rocks underwater. That is one detail I really love in all wide-angle waterscapes, subtle foreground detail combined with beautiful scenery - two images for the price of one! Looking at the clouds the light really wasn't in your favour here, but you have managed to achieve a beautiful photograph. Either the original photograph was very good, or your 'corrections' worked miracles. I prefer to think you did a great job with the camera in the first place!

Congrats on a great image,
Regards
Steve.

Excellent shot Bruce. I don't think there's any reason to fear using higher ISO's with digital these days. D70 is a superb bit of kit & even at iso 800 you can get more than acceptable results if you use NeatImage or Noiseware in postwork. Looks like you have a good lens at 2.8 so losing 2 stops shouldn't be a handicap. Worth experimenting with all ISO's. I've taken a couple of shots at ISO 3200 with 20D and although the noise is very high the results simply would not have been achievable using comparable film.

Look forward to some shots of England ..er... winning... the Ashes!!

Cheers,
Steve.
