Nice journalistic capture, hard for most of us to imagine being in this girl's situation. It is good to hear today that as many as 20,000 refugees have deen processed and relocated from the Astrodome and other surrounding shelters. These people will need our help for some time to come. I would urge donations to any of many great relief organizations. The American Red Cross is a fantastic first response group, others do great work at extended assistance; Feed the Children, Salvation Army, Second Harvest, Cert International or others.
What is not needed at this time is political finger pointing. Mistakes were made at all levels of government, begining at local level.
A parking lot full of school busses less than 1 mile from Superdome sat unused, left to be submerged under water, the Red Cross and trucks filled with emergency water were ordered not to enter area by the governer. The order to evacuate the city could have and should have been
issued 24 hours sooner, and wasn't issued until a second call urging that action was made from the White House. Existing evacuation plans called for use of city and school busses to be used for those citizens who didn't have means to get out on their own, but these plans were not followed. The Superdome was already designated as emergency huricane shelter before Katrina, but even though there was time, it was not stocked with provisions, portable toilets, or security.
There should be and will be an investigation of breakdowns in the entire response to this disaster, but the political finger pointing going on, starting just 2 days after Katrina struck, is disgusting at best, and certainly not benifiting response to victims at this time.

excellent image.. dramatic and very poignant.. great work..

as to the about, well, it will be also evident that besides the federal gov, the City and State (Louisiana) were totally unprepared to protect their city and state... they should look at their neighbors in Mississippi to see how it is done.

excellent capture of a terrible event... as to the Mayor, well.. he is not much of hero since the President had to almost order him to evacuate the city.. (thank God he did!) and when the Mayor finally did get "off his ass", he did not make any provisions for the poor who could not leave... it is unforgiveable that the local, state, and federal governments were so ill prepared for this event...thanks for sharing

This little girl you whose image you so effectively captured is ALIVE. As bad as the previous week was, she survived. Bad things happen to good people. It's not nice, but it does. It is so sad to know that an untold number didn't make it. I often wonder if they had made a serious effort to help themselves... and if not, why not. When you feel the urge to start pointing your finger, stifle it and go do something productive. I encourage you to do three things: keep up the good work, take charge of your own survival, and know deep in your heart that the government, regardless of who is in charge at the moment, IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!!!

it's funny both your country and mine reacted extremely fast to the devistation in Sumatra earlier this year pledging millions of dollars, yet when its our own it seams as if they dont give a hoot, i know the logistical nightmare a natural devistation can be, but we were in Sumatra by this timeline early this year. I know i went.
the only thing i can say and i'm not political, dont blame the top dog. if the actors want to help get off the TV blaming people, roll up their sleaves and get down there and help

Thank you for posting this image and 'about'. A very telling image representave of so many thousands. I'm rather dismayed that here on UF, in camparison to the tsunami disaster, it has garnered so much less attention, though there have been some nice posts to bring attention to it. A call for aid to the tsunami victims was carried on UF home page for some time and this situation is no less serious with even more people in need. I join you in asking everyone to do what they can to assist with donations. In addition to American Red Cross, Salvation Army and Feed The Children are two great orgaizations.

7++++ This shot sends me to tears....

I have seen this all to well here... Watching it on the news, it is simply unbelieveable. The human mind can not process such devistation unless you are in it, and even then, it is still mindshattering. I pray so hard for these people, the thousands of people homeless. As the headlines have said all over "This is Out Tsunami" and boy isnt that true... There was a man on the news yesterday that broke my heart. He got right up to the camera and started to cry. He said, "People, please help us, please save us. My 4 children are dying" It showed 4 little black children ranging in ages from about 6 to a newborn. It just breaks my heart to see this. God its just so helpless. Praying Praying Praying... Please donate and help these people survive, rebuild, and overcome... www.redcross.org or www.1800salarmy.org

many countries like this. when i was in serbia in the 1990s they had a one billion dinar note. that's 1,000,000,000. the bill was barely big enough to hold all the numbers....

well i didnt know about these rice terraces. just after dawn in yunnan seems to be a good time for photos, but at this time of the year as i remember, there's a lot of rain and cloud (my last summer's experience).

i love the image but i would have tried for a different angle to get rid of that tree in the foreground. i had similar problems at longji ti tian a couple of weeks ago and a little walk around the terrace and i could get a better unobstructed view.

these rice terraces seem to be less uniform in their size and shape than the ones in guangxi.

nice photo and best wishes ~ james

Wow, that's awesome. Really awesome. Personally, I think the reflections in the terraces, broken up by the borders of the terraces, makes this shot. Good one.
