James, very nice capture of the misty spirit of the place. Great light tones and well balanced composition. I like the angled lines of the creek banks and overall pastelic tone of the image. Regards, n,j

Thanks Pat. I agree that I had to get back into the wild. (The raptor shots were taken on an organized shoot all outside of cages, but they were restrained by jesses and leashes.) In the middle of Dec I went up to Grand Teton for a few days and froze my butt off with temps between –31°F (-35 °C) to –3 °F (-19 °C). It was worth it though to get some great landscape and wildlife shots that I'll start posting later today. I just got back from Bosque Del Apache NWR in NM where I shot snow geese and sandhill cranes. Later this week I'll be heading to Yellowstone and Banff/Jasper.

James: Nice work!
We love these little guys. Last year, we found one in the Arapahoe NWR near Walden. We're always hopeful to find another. Where did you find this one?

Hi James, Very strong use of DOF, obscuring the peripheral elements in this shot nicely. the clarity of tthis shot with the Sigma lens is quite astonishing; I find my Sigma 135-400 always a bit dull in tonal range / dynamic range, but that certainly doesn't show here. Thanks for posting the camera settings, too, very insightful.
Hope all is well, and I wish you all the best for 2006; looking forward to many more of your inspiring photos.
Cheers,
hugo

Great nature shot. Compositionally I think this might be stronger if you were to crop a bit off the top of the image. The crop would place greater emphasis on the ground and the relation it has with this type of owl. Very nice capture.

Hi James, Love the simplicity of this scene, yet aalso the surprising quality of nature that a sole pine tree can grow on such a steep hill. Spectacular lighting, the striking light on the snow is not only soft, but also shows a remarkable level of details.
The only thing that surprises me a bit (photographically) is that the twigs of the pine seem to have a bit of a whitish wash over them; Pusing up the levels would IMO give this photo a bit more "punch".
Yet a great shot, I like this one alot; as I do with most of your work.
Cheers,
Hugo

Oh be still my heart! This is pure poetry. The bird is such a beautiful work of art all by itself, but you have really captured the essence of its grace. The curved sweep of its tail feathers and the blurred flutter in the wings, along with the posture of the bird is superb. The extremely narrow DOF resulting in a near solid background really sets the bird off well -- it just pops off the page. Congrats on the very much deserved award and on being featured today. 7+ and a fav. Antonia
