Fantastic portrait! I love the expression of the father, full of love, and the look of the child... Excellent b-w tones.

Wahoooo way to go Graham. A beautiful image well deserving of this award.

I had to chuckle as I read your technical info about this shot. A 29 cent tool purchased at Wally World and $20,000 (or more) worth of photographic technical education to learn how to use it. Just gotta love it!

A stunning image Graham. Love the title, the colours, the lighting, the clarity, the composition and I will just have to put this one into my favourites.

Cheers - Ann

Thanks Jan. I didn't even know about it until I got a few comments from people. I had to go track it down, lol. The dedication is at http://www.usefilm.com/image/978603.html but it looks quite flat on here. I can email you the originasl if you'd like (or a print). Hope you have a great Thanksgiving, too.

Congrats for the very well deserved BIP. Really think your white tulips deserve an award. Yes, I missed your dedication or I would certainly have commented and thanked you. So, even though I missed it (Which shot?) thank you so very much. Have been a little busy (okay a lot busy)and haven't spent as much time with UF as I would like to spend. Besides - on my end it has really been pokey slow. Have a great Thanksgiving. Jan

Hi Chris, thanks a lot. I would have preferred better sharpness, but it was a toss-up between that and DoF - can't have both on 35mm . I had to prevent blow-out on the petal edges, so was therefore limited with aperture selection.

Hi Riny. Hoe gaan dit?

True - not easy to do!

The lens has to be parallel to the subject to keep the DoF lateral. As DoF is circular, and with a circle of confusion of 0.02 with digital, this is easily noticeable, regardless of the aperture used. I use a spirit level/protractor to do this (29 cents at Walmart )

Unfortunately, decreasing the aperture may destroy the lens' 'sweet spot' (usally f9.5)

The difference between f11 and f32 here is still only about 1 mm. DoF in this shot was about 5mm (1/4 inch).

Very often, a fast prime lens will work as well as there are less chromographic aberrations and the image can be enlarged to mimic a macro shot. Usually up to 250%.

Many photographers overlook the importance of prime lenses and feel the need to buy zoom lenses. Excellent practise is to keep a prime lens on the camera for a month and shoot in manual mode only. I believe my camera has a "P" setting somewhere.

My objective today is a horizontal shot of the inside of the flower, to show structure, so I have to carefully dissect a flower

The wife and I are hoping to find some stralitzias (Bird of Paradise) and some Arum lilies to shoot. I'll post the results.

These florals are for an exhibition in Austin, Texas in the New Year.
