Wow. What a wonderful construction! Hard to believe that such a complex structure is necessary for the weight of pedestrians... but is makes for a great image.

Thanks Roger, I'm glad we're getting there, being new around here and all. I'm sure we'll be reviewing each other's stuff in that I am a great fan of asian art. We'll talk about that someday,

The attachment didn't make it, Gary. (Thanks for the thought and the explanation.) Usefilm is a bit unfriendly over attachments--exceed the pixel limit of 500 or the size limit of 120k and it will just not appear. No error message. The only way you can check is to use the "preview" mode. You still won't see the picture, but if it WOULD be uploaded you see the little graphic sign. Hope this helps.

One more thing Roger, I agree the architecture looks a bit like over kill and there's some history behind that. This whole area was an amusement park until about the mid 1940s, called the Pike. Recent redevelopment of the area included the "Pike" theme and viewed from the side (attached), this overpass looks like a roller coaster. If you're a TV fan of the Long Beach Grande Prix, the street below is part of the track and this structure can be seen every April when the event is televised.

All that superstructure for an overpass? A real architectural extravaganza! But you've made it into a real picture. I ike it--the perspective, the colour contrasts and the strong composition, which I begin to recognize as one of your trademarks. Good training with the Crown Graphic, I guess!

Thanks Roger! Looks like I was singing to the choir. Good eye for noticing the inconsistancy. Ya gotta admit most would never notice, but I understand that I should be more careful with continuity. Continuity is a big issue in film making where I work as a SAG actor, so it's kind of the same thing, that I can appreciate. And since you brought the subject up, in my portfolio, all other things besides sky enhancement is real. Thanks again for your input and I'm happy to hear that you understand and appriciate today's technology.
My appreciation,
Gary Riedel

I think you may have misunderstood my comment "doesn't seem quite right." I didn't mean wrong/right I meant inappropriate/right. The sky has no gradation from horizon to near azimuth, and the clouds give no sense of depth. In other words it looks like what it is... I have absolutely no problem with using PhotoShop (or in my case PaintShop Pro) for everything I used to do in the darkroom, and for some things that were quite beyond my skills in those days. I am very grateful that digital technology makes it all so much easier (and less smelly). But I don't recall ever lifting a sky from one shot and implanting it in another. And if this IS done, preferably the result should be imperceptible, i.e., it should work as a complete image. Sorry for the misunderanding and thanks for the detailed reply. I trust my own position is a little clearer now.

Yes Roger, the sky is Photoshoped from another day. I did not intend for the category to mean that, however, I am a proud user of Photoshop Elelments. Having been in the dark room for many years in the 1960s, I'm well aware of what the film users do there with dodging, burning, modifying contrast, heating and chilling chemicals for special effects, etc. Today, digital photographers do in the dry light what we used to do in the dark wet. We use the technology that is available to us. I say that enhancing a photo in anyway is an art in the eye of the creator and if done well is an art unto itself. I hope that answers your question truthfully.

"Photoart" is often an indicator of a highly manipulated image. Does this mean that that sky was taken from another shot? I ask because it doesn't seem quite right, somehow, although the blue is a gorgeous contrast with the yellow roofs... Very strong composition and excellent framing.

Beautiful! They're not easy to capture, and this is just about perfect. What a pity there is to be no more E6 Kodachrome... I have slides from 50 years ago that look fine today, whereas the Agfa I turned to because it was twice as fast (50 ASA!!) has all faded.

Gary, I visited your photos because of your kind comment about the old lady vegetable seller (thanks) and was interested to see this beautifully composed picture. It's hard to think how you could possibly have better filled the frame! I was an Olympus fan for years--OM1, then OM2 and finally OM4. Your photos have lots of impact even as thumbnails!!

Thank you Kelly! How very nice of you to review my work. By the way this tea pot is one of a sequence of three at my website - http://www.griedel.photosite.com
I had fun doing it and another three pix combo I categorize as "still motion". Be proud if you visited my gallery at that site. It even has sound, albeit maybe a little corny.
Thanks again,
Gary
