Thanks Guido! I have several images from this catch but I liked this one since it was right after the catch and you can still see the splash of water behind the gull. Looks like you have a few birds in your area too! ;-)

Thanks Dave. The guy flew right by me... what was I to do? I barely squeezed it into the frame. It's amazing how many fish these birds seem to be able to eat!

Thanks Kerry, I'm glad you liked it. I checked out your gallery. Nice images in there. How you caught a DIF (dragonfly in flight) is beyone me!

Wow, that 1.4 lens really served you well here. I love the picture. Interesting angle on the light coming from below. Very well done.

Randy,

Not really a concern with comets, is it? ;-) This was shot at 70mm but the numbers are a little deceptive. It's about a 60% crop. Either way, that one hit surprisingly close. You can see it going right down through the trees. This was shot from my deck and there were many homes and trees around on higher ground than me. I felt *reasonably* safe and absolutely wouldn't attempt it in the open.

Dear Heather,

My dictionary must be wrong because I just looked up 'awful' and this belongs nowhere near that category. Great pose (not that she was posed though), great sidelight, beautiful subject. Nice work Ray.

Thanks Riny!

StingRay - thanks. I'm involved in a lot of things so my portfolio is pretty diverse. I'm always looking for something interesting and unique to photograph. The 300 2.8L is new and I am having a lot of fun with it. I often shoot very early and very late light and the 100-400 just wasn't getting me the shutter speeds I needed without bumping the ISO higher than I wanted. Paired with a 1.4x, I am finding it extremely versatile. I love Canon DPP. Thanks Ray and happy shooting!

Randy, thanks. Good point - it looks good enough for web use. It looks amazing in print though so anybody stealing it would be missing out!

I'm going to have to do some research and see if I can figure out what it is. Lots of bird id books but I suspect I won't find any dragonfly identification guides!

Marcus & Gust@vo - thanks so much for the comments, I'm glad you like it.

Brigitte, I was carrying the camera already mounted on the tripod so it was just a matter of spreading the legs and getting as close as I could focus while praying that it stayed there. I thought I was taking a photo of a simple dragonfly... then it spread its wings and I fired away!

Don - thank you. I knew of no other way to make it work. Rule of thirds just wouldn't work here.

Thanks Don. Since he was in flat light and it was getting dark, I had my lens almost wide open at f4. The depth of field was inches so most of the shot wond up out of focus. I had to manual focus due to the tall grass.

Thanks Wolf. The side wind certainly helped. The truth is I wasn't expecting him to come from where he did. They usually come from my side where there is better evening light. He did wander into the better light but he was further away there. When he napped in front of me, I could only see a tiny portion of one side of his antlers. I locked my tripod on that spot and waited, hidden behind my tripod on the edge of the woods.
