Hi dear Christine,

I don't know Picasa, but I am learning more each day about PS (Adobe PhotoShop). The last one is a great program and really offers much more than the darkroom possibilities of the past.
So I can really advice you this tool if you want to be able to control the complete process from A till Z. On another nice (bumble)bee shot of you I explained a bit more about values for 18-200mm lens, found through experimenting by the "trail-and-error" method, but in a systematic way.

Friendly greetz,
Albert Jacobs

Hi Christine,

Excellent macro, with very nice details. Composition and colors are also good. You isolated the subject very well from the background with your use of DOF. I like your POV (eyelevel with the (bumble)bee).

A few experience values I came up with since about 1 year exercising on macro, under different circumstances. I mostly use my Sigma 18-200mm (comparable with your Nikon, only quality of yours is higher)
Further, I use a cheap Voigtlander 100 mm macro, somethings with additional rings.

Each type of lens has it's own optimum, that you can find by shooting equal shots of a subject at the same distance and under the same lightconditions. Just change each time one value in a serie to compare (F-factor of iso) and later on the mix of best practices. So I concentrate the rest only to the 18-200mm lens.

Afterwards I realised that I worked to long with a too high iso value (oft 400 or 640) and to long at f-values from f6.3 till f11.0 (18-200mm).

Maybe it helps you to experiment a bit on macro with f-values between f7.1 till f16.0 / f18.0 when using the 18-200 mm at macro-position.
It is also useful to take iso 200 as a startpoint for shooting and to higher this value only when lightconditions do not allow you to work with this value.
Anyway try to limit to no more than about iso 400 till maximum 640, except when you want a noise effect because it's needed by your subject or the speficic view you want to realise.

I hope, this advice can help you. Anyway this view of yours is excellent and I see a lot of fast improval in your skills and results. Th pollen on the legs of the (bumble)bee is a nice detail that adds value to your view. Well seen and done !

So go on with your nice work and give us the possibility to enjoy more of +your beautiful shots. Compliments, dear friend !

Friendly greetz,
Albert Jacobs :)

Thanks, Albert.

I used 400 ISO here. I choose the F5.6 setting because the background was very ugly (trucks) and I wanted to get rid of as much as possible. I applied a little sharpening in Picasa (I am woefully ignorant of PS), Nikon D200 doesn't apply sharpening in the camera, so the pictures can be a little soft sometimes.

Thanks for adding it your favorites :) and for your comments.

Woooowww dear Christine,

Love this shot ! Straight into my fav.
This is a very nice macro with a great action-moment. You really caught the right moment and I know this one is difficult, specially at the f5.6 setting. Which iso value did you use and/or did you use sharpening by PS ? Compliments !

Warm greetz,
Albert Jacobs :)

Hi Christine,
That's a funny name for a dog - in our native language, it means "pest". Very good dog portrait, he smiled at just the right time!

Thank YOU Christine -- Sure I would -- Her name was Roxanna and she was small for a Lab- 50 lbs. She was 8 yr. when I lost her, best friend I ever had- but YOU know that :)
I never had to use a lease, I just carried it - I was her world and she walked beside me everwhere.... I had to tie her up to stop her from playing too much... what a character...but they all are.

This is perfectly exposed. I have a similar shot, but it's about 5 seconds, as I closed down to about f/11 to maximize focus.

It's such a joy to study, orbit and shoot The Needle, isn't it?
