Hi Shirley! Thanks for your comment! At photo club judging, cluttered background and particularly, bright highlights in the background are not tolerated well. I am sure you have encountered this pattern. What I tried to do is to include the backdrop of Spring Beauties, yet still cause them to recede enough to not compete with the main subject. I am not entirely confident that I have succeeded. Would you advise that I remove some of the white highlights around the main bloom?

Yes, I too do not have much time for commenting. But please continue to post, as I enjoy your images and hints of your exploits in Africa.

An abstract, seemingly otherworldly! I can't quite figure it out - maybe flower pedals? Just great, Joggie!

Cool capture, Andre! These are such small birds! Are your cropping much? I use the 300mm and TC17 quite a lot for wildlife. But for small birds it is rarely enough without some serious cropping. I am budgeting for 200-400 in the near future. Bet that won't be long enough reach either with either tc 14 or 17! Some say it is optically not good with tc's. So another thought has been the 300 f/2.8 which does reasonably well with the new tc 20 EIII.

James, carousel motion and colourful lights, do beg for experimentation. This effect is perfectly replicable, panning technique and slow shutter.

James, I really value interesting comments, as yours, and comparisons of technique. Yes, you tempted me to do a search on luxagraphia! It is your term but very appropriate to in-camera motion effects, whether multiple exposure or single timed exposure. Every once in a while, when subject motion is pronounced, I am tempted towards multiple exposures. I also like the more (sometimes) controlled effects from deliberate camera movement, rotation, etc. Usually I find it useful to blend in a "stationary" exposure, or enhance the edges in post processing.

Dan, I hope you enjoy the process of buying a macro lens. For me this is always an exciting time! I do remind you to buy the longest lens you can afford. Since I bought a 200mm. macro, I rarely use my 60 and 105mm. I also use my 300mm telephoto a lot for close-up work.

Thanks for your kind comment, Ashoke. I usually do not seek ratings but critiques are welcome. It is just a preference.

Outdoors present a problem in floral photography! However, the stacking software will align images - so some motion would be tolerated. How much? I will have to experiment and see about that.

Graham, I can't get this depth of field with a single shot - unless, I resort to an ultra wide or fish-eye perspective. The flowers are six inches across and separated from each other. We are looking at foreshortened perspective and everything sharp, background still blurred nicely. Can't do it any other way. Of course there is the option of selective focus. That would be another photograph. But, assuming I took this shot at f/22, then image quality would suffer from diffraction and I would get about 2 inches dof. I think focus stacking is a no-brainer if you want to do this type of shot.

On the contrary, I'm assuming about 3 minutes with approximately 50 frames. There will be a combination of motion effect and still shots. I can afford to be selective, Graham!

Funny, Graham! Like it or not, motion is intentional, all part of the show. I have some 600 images of this carousel and will be making it into a slide show with some real band organ music. You wont have time to move your head up and down! But, maybe crack a smile...

Graham, this is not a good sample with the stamens over-exposed. I think I "worked" it too much. After experimentation with better software and optimal number of images I will now get better results.

The 300mm f/4 focus very well for close ups - but that is not macro. The lens will go to about 1:3, but macro is 1:1 (or life size.) With extension tubes or tele-converter, the lens has practical limit at about 1:2 (1/2 life size.) You can use a close up diopter, Canon 500D, to get 1:1 with this lens. This is less expensive than purchasing a macro lens. However, even without attachments, the 300 f/4 is a great close-up lens!

Steve, focus stacking, combining many images taken at different point of focus, is done in software or painstakingly with layer masks in photoshop. CS4 has the ability to automate focus stacking but specialized software like Zerene Stacker or Helicon Focus do it better. For more details, you can google focus stacking.
