Brigitte, thanks for letting me know that you enjoyed this image! With this soft-focus, pastel effect, I found that I could not make a good print. Since then I have printed a more conservative, straight, version and have won awards at club competition. A large 12x18 in. print hangs in my home! Awards are hit and miss - that should not be a surprise considering the huge volume of submissions to usefilm. Even at club level competition, judges will vary considerably on how they rate an image. I was told by one judge that "judges" are prejudiced against sunset photos because they are "tired of seeing them." Eb

Thanks, Kes! I am also not too sure what to look for in an HDR, but learning. I find that no matter how hard one tries, the HDR retains a strange local contrast effect - not quite real. That is likely inherent in the tone-mapping when one compresses such a wide range in to something which is presentable. In this instance, I discovered that a little soft focus effect smooths things out nicely. That's the major accomplishment here! Eb

Eb, the second image is lovely like a painting! It's too tough for me to call a preference here. I like them both. At first I thought the second image was too "monotonish" :), however upon reflection the warm tones have a nice calming/unifiying effect - as if to project "everything is one". Back to the first image, with more pondering, perhaps the saturated colors provide an eye pleasing "third" object, with the first and second being the light/sun and boats. Also, I'm not real familiar with what I'm supposed to be looking for in HDR images. They seem to have a certain sheen about them and the exaggerated red/blue colors may well complement that....(surrealness?).
First class images, Eb, and I appreciate the time you put into them!

Thanks for your comment, Gary! The image is not a stitch but a combining of 7 different exposures, all in perfect registration. This requires specialized HDR software, such as Photoshop CS2/3 or Photomatix. Eb

Thanks, Avi! It is not hard to do HDR, but you must practice hard to get a reasonable portrayal. HDRs are by definition strange because they are a compression of what the eye sees. Eb

Kes, been thinking about your comment. Attached is a version which eliminates the offending saturated colours. However, I had increased the intensity of the sunset a bit to much and, therefore, rejected that version. What do you think? Eb

Ed,
Very unusual and beautiful image. I am intrigued how you indicate you used seven images, yet there is no double exposures anywhere in the scene notable by myself.
Congratulations on a winning and beautiful image. Best wishes from America....Gary

Thanks for your observation, Kes! It's hard to decide - maybe six of one or a half dozen! It seems that the oversaturated blues and orange are within the overall colour scheme and add a point of interest... Well, I've tried a half dozen or more versions. After the dust settles, I might try some more versions and maybe desaturate everything except the fluorescent blue and orange! ;-) Seriously,' though, you make a good point! Eb

Wonderful image, Eb! It seems to me if the blue & orange on the boats were not so oversaturated it would match/complement the other more natural colors. But then again, perhaps the bright colors gives the shot the zing. :)

Thanks, Sudhir! There are compositional advantages to the tighter crop and the essence of the theme is still there! I like it, but, I am not sure that I would prefer it. Eb
