Hi Chris, sorry for the late reply. Thanks for the feedback. This place is pretty impressive; everything is just huge, way too hot to handle and a pretty rough environment. A great opportunity to be able to shoot there.

Hugo this is an impressive picture. I think the contrast and lighting really portray the power behind this heavy industry. I like the way the steam lites up and the glow of the metal is fascinating. I am going to check the rest of this series.

Hi Marty,

Thanks for your comment. As to the shutterspeed, molten iron emits such a strong light, that even at this distance anything slower than 1/180'would've completely overexposed the image. Any closer, and you wouldn't be able to descern the details without looking through a welding glass, the light is completely blinding, especially at night. I have shots of this scene exposed at 1/2000' and faster, with a medium aperture (f/8 - f/ 16) - so we're not talking about candle light here...:)

I love the shallow DOF, Shadows, Tones and Highlights regarding this wonderful capture. I tend to shoot with slower shutter speeds most of the time. Just curious why 1/180? Was it to capture the steam better?

Hi Jude, I hear what you say. I always feel ambiguous about frames (too?) but I'd like to share my deliberations in this case:

I think the white background of UF is not really suitable for a border-less image. I've used this similar approach in black too, but found that both to "standard" as well as too heavy. Yet, I felt the type of image needed something heavy, dark and (well, yes, breaking my own views here - ) intrusive.

I do believe there's a difference between photos published on the net and images in print to put above the couch . A good framing should compliment the photo, and not clash with it. At times, it's better not to use a frame. If I'd were to print this one, and put in a frame, I think I'd opt for something entirely different.

In this case, I choose this type of unorthodox border, sampled out of the meridian of the tones. To me, it fits, but that's totally subjective.

Thanks for your feedback... I'm not sure I agree it's only what *I* like that counts, If that were the case, most of us would block themselves from improving. I tend to find the different opinions much more stimulating and helpful....:)

In the end, it's really what *you* like that counts, my friend, so I'd say stick with the frame. Trusting your excellent tastes and instinct, I think I'll sit here awhile and see if it grows on me too... *smile*

Hi Jude, thanks for your feedback. Much appreciated on the frame too, as I felt a bit ambiguous about it at first. the majority seems to like it, and I've grown to like it. Obviously very subjective, and I value your point of view.... (I'd say it counts double...;))

Hi Saeed, you pin-pointed my planning of this triptych very well (within reason, of course, as I'm fairly sure the roll out will always be different than anyone can anticipate - I hope)

As to the cirumstances behind this place are mainly very hot and quite dangerous...:) The iron poors out of this furnace at 1600 degrees Centigrade, radiating it's heat. These shots were taken in assignement for presentational and promotional purpose. A very impessive sight, as the height of the furnace itself is approx 130m in height...:)

Looking at the quality result is amazing, fine details and clear too, as this one part of three, it is always difficult to anticipate judgment. IMHO I would like to see this one with a different angle to specify a pin point to match the title, may be a close to the "inferno" with part of the huge machine! but that only you can judge, see it and not knowing the concomitances behind the place and the capture, better to wait and see the others two.

That's some pretty hot shooting there Hugo (pun intended). To be inside such a place it must have radiated some heat. Under such seemingly extreme conditions do you tend to get in and out as fast as you can with your camera gear? Excellent lighting control and a very nice composition of the major components of this huge piece of machinery. Another vote for the frame. It really compliments the image well. A great choice of colours. A very powerful industrial image Hugo. Very dynamic indeed.

Thank you also for your kind comment on my Bridge over the waterfall image. It's about the most beautiful waterfall I've seen and I've been taking photos of it in all seasons and angles. OK so maybe I'm just a tad obsessed with it. :) Thanks for dropping by. I appreciate your valued opinion and comments.
