Hi Doyle and thanks very much for your great comment! I'm on a long break from my normal daily routine on UF - I've just moved to Toronto and still in a state of chaos living with boxes and renovations. Have a great summer, and hope to be back to write all my friends as soon as I'm done with this mess :) Best regards, Ina

Ina:
I think Mark Longo's featured critique (which landed the two of you on the front page) pretty much says it all. I disagree with him about only the glass beads, which I think are perfect where they are. I can only add one more word to his brilliant critique. "WoW".

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Oh, Ina your making me hungry again. Good thing that bad doll isn't here stealing all the food again. This is my favorite of the still life food shots. It is "tastefully" done. I Really like the colors and the shadows in this picture. Wonderful details.

Hi Ray, I think the front page critique was a short lived one :) It has flashed once before, it must be one of those that happen when the data base is updated! I'm happy that you liked the Cleanup Team group photo, I took a day off yesterday, and didn't post it, just emailed it.
I hope you are doing well, nothing serious I hope, and wish you speedy recovery.
Thanks very much Ray :) Best regards, Ina

Hi there Ina...this is a wonderful still life that Mark has taken to the front page with his critique of the day.
I love the colours to this and the offbeat mix of fruit and veg. Clarity is great and there are loads of details to look at...Well done to you.
I love what you did with the photos over at Rina's place and the the Clean-up Team is superb...well done you. I have health problems just now and I am not posting or commenting for a while but I just had to look in to say my thanks..Best wishes to you Ina.....Ray

An old letter, written by hand. I'm sure you must have some in a box somewhere. I believe it would have worked better with the whole atmosphere of the contents. After all, this is a composition created in the spirit of the Old Masters, even though you may not have intended it like this. But....this is the result, this is the idea transmitted to the viewer. I again stress that this is my opinion, which is not necessarily the best.
Best regards,
Gabriela

Thank you very much for your comment Gabriela :) I chose that piece of paper because it was handy and it had something printed and something handwritten, and it crumpled with straight edges, no other special reasons. What would you have used? I'm open for ideas, Ina

I love this still life very much!!!! The arrangement is great in the matching of colours and details. The play of light and shadow is realized with the hand of a Great Master. The only thing that prevents me from enjoying it fully is....the piece of paper! I would have preferred a different kind of paper, more appropriate and much more akin to the presentation around. At least this is my feeling! But, you probably had your own reason for choosing the paper we can see.

Yeah Rina...Ina's been leaving trash all over the place. This one isn't too bad apart from the smell of rotting pumpkin (LOL). It's the other image we need to go sort out....that is if I can find my way there through the trash. LOL

See ya there.... (hehe)

Thanks Ann, the paper was some sort of a "to do" list, a page ripped from my desk calendar. So if it's gone, whatever it was, I don't have to do it anymore!
And yes, you can invite Rina, Janet, Ray, Gayle, and all to pick up the trash from the trash picture :) That looks like a good place to start!

PHEW Ina....isn't it about time you gave the old rockmelon a burial. *cough* *gasp* Actually it looks like there is still some life left in it as there is still a touch of colour in it's cheeks. You're really working the old brain here throwing in the paper. I feel compelled to come up with a very thought provoking reason for including the paper in with the foods....umm...sorry no can do. :) Other than to say it makes the same sort of noise as the onion skin when crumpled. hehe Love the composition though and I really like the lighting. Is that a red pepper hiding in the shadows? Great work.

Ok that having been said it looks like I'm going to have to call in Rina to help me take out the trash. LOL

Cheers - Ann

Wow Mark, I'm so happy that you wrote me such a great analysis :) It's very rewarding :)

As you noticed, the red pepper jar acts as a substitute for a gathered red backdrop cloth. I could have set a real red cloth, but it's still winter and windy, and I had to secure the other navy colored backdrop cloth with a heavy paperweight. As the sun moved, I started to get a larger shaded area to the left, and kept moving the whole arrangement until it became unstable and it fell off the little table! Luckily nothing broke :)
I couldn't control the glass marbles too well, because I employed a trick: I stuck some paper under the back of the tray to give it a little slant (trick from my painting days!) and therefore the marbles were sliding to one edge. Also other things were fairly unstable, so I think in the future I need to use a larger table. There is also a miniature teaspoon I used to stop the marbles from sliding back.
Ideally, this should be done with artificial lighting indoors, and have more control over it, but I found the balcony to be a quick and easy setup.
Finally I desaturated the colors in PS, the orange was too orangy, and I'm starting to like the faded look. I have a number of others with a pair of small opera binoculars (vintage), etc.
Folding the paper was a good thing, I had it flat initially, and it wasn't interesting.
My next props will be: crusty bread, newspaper, and I'm even thinking of some clothing - a scarf, a glove, etc.
So thank you very much for the support and encouragement, it means a lot to me!
Best regards,
Ina

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique I love this one. The colors are superb. A very appealling air of informality! And a really attractive (appetizing?) grouping of colors!

I think the orange takes the arrangement to a new place than some of the other shots you have displayed of this similar arrangements. Somehow the vivd color of the orange highlights the soft subtlety of the other colors in the shot, and also provides a nice central focus. My eye ventures out from there, but always has a resting place to return to. I think the glass beads are an interesting element, though maybe I would like them to be more evident. I did not notice them at first glance, but I'm not sure how to suggest making them more evident. Really though, I don't think they're a crucial element and could be there or not there, which is fine. I think the arrangement is strong as it is and doesn't really need them.

I like the shallow DOF in this. I believe the background colors are red peppers but it also looks like a gathered red cloth backdrop in the lowered light and I think that is an attractive and interesting apsect. I also love the mating of the onion and wadded paper. The textures are so similar and the paper calls attention to the element of delicacy in the arrangement brought by the onion skin. I like the paper as human element via the handwriting too, and the fact that it's a discarded sheet adds to the lovely informality of the arrangement. I also like that you positioned the arrangement at the end of the tray, rather than along a longer edge, with the orange sort of spilling off the end. It may have seemed like an obvious choice at the time but it makes the arrangement look more happenstance, more casual and less posed, which I think is a nice nuance. Clever.

The lighting is superb! The darkness to the left and the dullness of the red provides a wonderful contrasting backdrop that makes the main subjects pop, and also hold much more attention for the viewer. Also, the fade-to-black on the left introduces a subtle hint of mystery.

Lastly, I think the paper and onion, as elements that are positioned off the tray, yet still in contact with the tray and arrangement grounds the tray nicely, even though we don't see much of the surface it all sits on. We don't need to.

Ina, this is an awesome work, you should be very proud of this. It's definitelty a fave of mine, I hope its one of yours too!

Best,
Mark

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/17/2006
Hi Davide, the melone is weeks old, to point of rotting :)))) but I've also desaturated the entire picture, because the orange was too orange - too bright. The onion has been consumed in a salad, and the strange fruit is another weeks old dried lime (lost color due to age, and desaturation).
Best regards, Ina

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/17/2006
Hi Rina - thanks for dropping by the buffet :) The lighting is natural sunlight, and I've desaturated the entire composition because it was too colorful, but it can also be the (caugh) age of the honeydew - also known in some circles as a "rockmelon" - which is getting closer to a "rot-melon" since it's used as a still life and nobody was allowed to eat it.
And I needed a piece of paper and so ripped a page of my desk calendar :) Now you have all the dirt on this - Do I get a tip?

Ciao, Ina!
i agree with Rina's comment...
the MELONE (honeydew) look very pale but i think it's due to the season, right?
i really love that golden onion!
pls, make a still-life about these onions, that looks pretty warm, and have a particular reflection of light!
another intercultural exchange..eheh
ciao!
Davide
...as usual, a still-life with taste!
what's the name of that strange fruit between grape and orange?

Fantastic still life with the fruit, veg and paper. The lighting looks good although I think the rockmelon(cantelope?) looks a bit pale, but I'm not sure if that's actually its colour. Could be the flash... Details are perfectly sharp and focused. Great job on this. Say, are they your lottery numbers there Ina...? :))

Cheers
