I know what you mean but when I tried to shoot them in shadow I ended up with high light area's in the shot too.

Dennis, the key to good portraits over there where the skin is a bit on the dark side is to shoot them in open shadow or overcast conditions. You can use a small strobe for fill flash to put a catchlight in the eyes. As for shooting in sunlight, good luck the contrast is just too high to get the full range of tones so you just loose too much.

Nice shot.
I have just got back from malaysia and have taken some portraits but I obviously have a lot to learn...your are 1000 better.
I had problems with strong light and everybody standing in the shade creating silohetes.
