Classical, textbook patterns here. With the minimal blur to show character and motion, I would choose this one for a bird atlas. I didn't realize there was so little banding of the tail in this species.

Thanks Dave you really do notice the details. We shoot these birds at aperture priority, so when he flies, the lighting can change very quickly, a shot from 5 minutes ago can be different to another less than 1 minute ago. So the shutter can go from as fast as 1/2000 to about 1/600, which I think for this one was my shutter speed, so it's not as tack sharp as my other hawk shot, where you see everything in sharp detail. You also see the blur on the wing tips. I also just learned to change my in-camera settings to do less saturation so I get a more natural color. BTW, I saw some on-line tutorial on shooting lightning and thunderstorm, I'll have to look for it and send you the link. Take care! J

At first, I kind of wondered why the wings were just a bit blurred and wondered what the comparison was from the other photo. I didn't remember any blur at all in that. So in comparing, yes, the other is a bit sharper.
I chalk that up to the motion, probably in the first, he was more in soaring mode. Between the two, I like this better since he appears more natural as to color, etc. Maybe the other was heavily adjusted.
So the only critique I would have is that one talon is in the sun, the other shaded. But understanbly that was out of your control. I understand "first shots". Like my lightning photo, you try and try and when something comes along, you take it and be happy. It (the lightning photo) isn't the best but I am darn glad I got what I got.
So congratulations on getting what you were after, there will be more opportunities for you eventually.
Best wishes, Dave

I have no experience in wildlife/birds shoting at all, but for me this image works well, dear Jinggoy. What a nice patterns of this hawk, and what a look - predator you see at ones. When you taking photos, how actually close you can get to them?
My best regards, Virgis

Very nice red tail shot Jinggoy, The colors and detail are perfectly as seen. I like the full wing span with the slight hint of motion on the tips, I know you planned that :) I see many wonderful bird shots in your future! I really do think you already had the knowledge to shoot these guys in flight, Just needed more Ops! By the way Im only 1 year older than you, whats up with the MR. LOL....

Hi Jinggoy, A fine example of this hawk and it's beautiful form. I like how the tip of the wings are spaced out and the angle of the capture. It seems like you're getting the hang of getting these excellent in-flight shots - and I'm sure it takes a lot of practice and dedication to achieve these type of results. Great work, keep it up!
