About This is a Lensbaby view of a box of thread or floss for creating stitched canvas pictures such as counted cross-stitch. It is amazing to watch my wife do these free hand and from patterns and create beautiful craft work. We have many hanging on our walls throughout the house.

Hussam -- Thanks so much; this is one of my favorite pictures because of the color and because the photo reminds me of my wife, as needlework is her hobby.
--Best regards to you, Jan

Glinda -- The lens-baby is a tricky tool, one I have not totally mastered, I must confess. They are much fun to play with and can result in a variety of interesting and often desirable effects.
If your primary approach is journalistic then you would find the LB rarely of value. But if you do like to break loose from reality now and then they can offer a many options.

What an odd effect! Just googled lensbabies to figure out what everyone was talking about. Can't decide if I like the effect in this context or not, but it seems that there would be a lot of cool ways to use them. Your colors are as usual gorgeous. Love the subject.

Thanks so much, James. I appreciate the comment -- you made me smile with your comment about not owning much. Sometimes not having the baggage of possessions makes you go elsewhere to seek out interesting subjects. In my case, my wife collects interesting things as well as doing craft work. I could stay busy photographing all the beautiful things that she collects!

Dave -- And there is more! This is one of about a bazillion boxes, all sorted so meticulously.
I am tempted at night to sneak into the room and shuffle the colors up. :)
--Thanks, Jan

Onie -- Thanks so much for your comments. And yes, Nancy has done a number of projects of her own design or from photos. I have several needlepoint pictures of pets that passed away for example; one for a cat named Ninja and another for recently departed Zoe. On some of her past projects I have scanned pictures and reproduced them onto graph-like stock or simply re-sized pictures so she could do a 1:1 match to the size she was planning for on canvas.
She also does traditional samplers of great variety including some unique European examples.

The first thing I thought of when viewing the thumbnail Jan was, a wardrobe or shop display of brightly coloured clothing, all neatly folded and stacked... :)

... then I read the about... ~~GRIN~~...

Jan, has your wife ever replicated a portrait or one of your photos with stitches...??? My youngest sister does them as special gifts for family ie our parents B&W wedding photo for their Golden Anniversary a few yrs. back...

Can only imagine the beauty, looking at these wonderful colours, that adorns the walls of your family home...:)

Great idea well executed Jan...:)

Marlyce -- Thanks for the comments. Nancy has a lot of these boxes, all in some kind of mysterious order. As for the wizard on black, sometimes Nancy complains about working on black or dark backgrounds; they apparently are not to her liking and take a toll on her patience and eyesight. Maybe someday you will finish that wizard!

I knew I liked your wife. I have several of these boxes too. Don't mention it to Doyle as he will bring up the wizard on black that I have been working on for several years now......would have more time to do this if he did not want to keep going out to take pictures. Interesting perspective on this one.

Super colourful subject and great outcome for your LB.
Many years ago my own wife created a cross stitch picture. It took ages but the result was excellent and still hangs on the wall today. Has never started another since.

A Lensbaby 2 costs € 129 here in Holland. Yes, I found a website allready...
Thank you, Jan, for this new direction for me in photography.

John -- Thanks so much for your comment. The newest unit, the Lensbaby 3 is pricey but if you look around for a Lensbaby 2 you may find significant price reductions. Do not get a Lensbaby prior to the Model 2 no matter how low the cost. It is fun and invites new ideas but takes a bit of practice for getting the hang of using it properly.

It is nice to have some fine craft work about that Nancy makes on a regular basis.

Wayne -- Thanks for viewing and for your favorable comments. I have only had the Lensbaby for a short period of time and have not explored its full potential. It can produce some interesting results with practice. It has removable disks with varying apertures with bellows allowing swings and tilts. The blurring effects can be pleasant on the correct subjects and I like the color blending that results.

A lensbaby? That was a new word in my vocabulary:-) I must admit that I would personally prefer an image with clarity all over the field. Still I love the variety of colourful threads. Nice having a talented wife within craftwork I´m sure!
Take care

Hi Robin!!! Thanks for your comments and yes - practicing (with playing thrown in) is still under way. In this case I started out with the notion that the LB was the right lens for the job instead of just looking around for LB potential pictures.
I took 24 pictures in three groups of eight. I would take eight shots, transfer to Photoshop and view them and then make more adjustments. The last group had shifts and bends to move the sweet spot to the right and up slightly. I did not want the sweet spot in the center and I wanted the blur and blending to be different around the edges. The bending was trial and error and thus the three groups. Although I could bring the views up on the camera I felt it was easier to judge the results on the PC screen.

Great to see you're playing (or should I say practicing?) with the LB Jan...works very well for this shot. Sweet, sweet spot...love the range of colors. I think the lensbaby offers a unique view to the new project...well done!

I'm curious...how many shots (just for comparison, I take a ton just to get one or two keepers), and did you take any with a "bend"?

Take care...Robin

Mel -- Thanks for your comments. And yes...she is very organized, cataloging a number of boxes with various stock threads and supplies in some mysterious order known only to her.
On this picture I intentionally shifted the sweet spot off center to blur colors in a not so symmetrical arrangement.

Thanks, Joe. I never imagined how hard it would be to wrestle with the LB to get it set right. I sure never will cover a sporting event with it. :)
So far have only been able to use on a tripod. Hoping to get more practice as time goes on.
