About The base of a palm tree

I am busy presenting a basic course in photography and was challenging the students to forget about the specs and superior quality of fancy equipment - the photo is taken within the mind first - the camera is just a tool to make it visible. To demonstrate the concept I used my 2megapixel Sony cellphone camera to take some abstract photos in a nearby garden. Made some minimum enhancements in PS.

What do you think - do I have a point?

Thanks for the comments Yoshiyuki - The filter? - It is a bit of both. The light was very poor (deep shade) and the textures on the bark not as defined and "gritty" as I wanted. I tried various filters and this really showed what I had in my minds eye before I took the photo. Part of the challenge was also to illustrate to think "out of the box" and that we dont need expensive/fancy equipment to be creative. Regards.

It's amazing what one can shoot with cellphone nowadays! Most of the people in Japan prefer it to a camera, easy to carry, easy to snap! (not I)I love the result of the filter you applied here! May I ask, you applied the filter because you were not satisfied with the quality of the shot or were you just experimenting?
Regards,
YT

Yep 10 points... LOL!!! I did (eventually) buy a 'fancy' camera, but still think that my best shot are with the tiny/simple one... or: the photo is only as good as the 'equipment' behind the camera. Like what you've done with this natural abstract... the 'watercolor' treatment works... well done/good point... ;-DD

Hi Joggie,

Splendid serie of "challenge" and how to catch attention by approach. You definitly have a point here and I am sure your students learned a lot of basics, that they will not forget easily due to your approach.

Friendly greetz,
Albert Jacobs :)

If you've got it, you've got it! You are a master of your craft, Joggie - wish I were one of your students!
