Swallows occasionally eat mineral-rich soil, egg shells and exposed shellfish fragments, possibly to recoup the minerals lost during egg formation. In this way, non-living minerals and ancient clam beds are slowly being recycled and incorporated into the living tissues of these birds. The scientific name Thalassina is Latin for "sea green", a tribute to this birds's body color.
