About Common Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus). I thought I give this shot a try in black and white. The yellow flowers were quite vivid but this is also appealing. Shot with a Kodak DC4800 using its built in Zoom lens on tripod. I saturated the colors and then used the channel mixer to predominatly alter the red channel. So here they are: Common Sunflowers a la tux. What I have noticed is that thinking beforehand as to whether or not to use black and white allows you to shoot more hours in the day. I know shoot a lot in the middle of the day when there is a lot more contrast, it gives me more opportunities to convert otherwise overextended color shots to something like this.

Otto, thanks for your comments on my photo of the Black Crowned Night Heron. You asked several questions about avian photography. I didn't know if this site allows access to members email. I am not a professional photographer, but have been taking serious pics for 30+ years. If you would like to contact me my email I would be more than happy to give advice, if I can.

Great work and daring photo, to shoot sunflowers in B&W, agree with you on the beautiful contrast here... Suggest checking the Blue or the Green Channel, load it and use the burnning tool, to enhance the tones in the light parts of the image...... just to widen your tonal range... great work though Otto.
