About Another one in blue hues, just like this city looks on sunny mornings, but this time with a wider angle. Perhaps I should better use a not as wide angle for getting the reflections nearer/bigger. Any comments would be very welcome.

Hi Bobot!

This was much of what the discussion has been about this one. And I am very glad to see such a convergence on this subject.

Sometimes we all agree! ;-)

Cheers!

Hi Nick,
I wasn't able to follow the discussion yet, I too, have a set of compositions that are divided almost at the center and each can stand alone as a separate photo.. meaning no element connects the two just like your photo here..
regards..

Thanks a lot for the nice comment, Bobot!

It really seems that the "two parts" have caught much attention about this one! There has been a lot of very good discussion about them.

Cheers!

I do that quite often too, Avi! There are landscapes that really scream for a vertical frame. It goes sometimes so far that I stich vertical panoramics. And quite often such vertical takes of landscapes can enhance the depth extremely.

The duck is indeed a very humble but this way also "cool" protagonist here. More or less some kind of Diogenes that just goes his daily ways. ;-) I was very glad to see its contours being still very clear in the shadows, but still having no other kind of details on it.

Cheers!

And imagine that I considered this one to be good but in a way that allows for many things to be done better.

I am perfectly ok with the transition from dark to light. In fact I am pretty much ok with the way this picture came out. The obvious temptation is to take this in the wide format, but just for THAT, taking it in the portrait mode avoids the cliche. Even with landscapes, that is my take - I prefer looking at those 'portrait-style' landscapes much more.. what can I do - that's me ! :) :)

And the duck.. ohh how perfectly it blends in with the whole scene.. being the main protagonist of the scene, yet being almost invisible ! .. letting everything else take the spotlight, yet staying on it's own humble corner, just to hold on to that something which transforms this picture from a mere cityscape to one of life !!

Cheers !!!!

Yes, once in a while I do something good, too! ;-)

Thanks a lot, Gustavo! As already said I think that the image is good and that at the same time allows much for making it even better. This is why I thought it should go to the critiques corner - for discussion about the possibilities.

But of course it is perfect! ;-)

Cheers!

Thank you very much Kiarang!

I thought that this one was good for discussion and saying what could be done better. That is, I was more convinced of it as a candidate for bettering than for an award. Still I am of course happy about that.

Cheers!

Thanks a lot Andre!

I guess the bots counted here data in, data out, then got aware of the raised bandwidth, and decided it was a PoD! ;-)

Seriously now, I was convinced of it, but ni a rather different way. I thought that it was a "fruitable" one, in the sence of presenting a basis for further possible ways to make it better, and this was the reason for putting it in the critiques corner. As I said to Avi, perhaps this was a blessing in disguise.

The many different views about cropping and also anything else are certainly highly interesting. I think that this is one great part of the fun of all that. We should never miss that.

About Jack London, "Call of the Wild" as another name of "the slap from the inside"... Yes, it makes perfect sense to me. A rather strong parallel that I see here. When I think of it, it could be interesting to try to translate that into photography.

Cheers!

Thanks a lot Avi!

Well, I put it in the critiques corner because I thought that there was much to be said about what could be done better, and then it went PoD. Perhaps what I thought about those possibilities for it was also a blessing in disguise.

The only weak hint for the protagonist is in the title, and so indeed it can be overlooked easily. Donald was not awaken yet. ;-)

I guess that this is one that strongly demands to be seen as a whole, i.e. better copy it into PS and make it smaller so that it fits the screen, than looking at it at 100%-size and scrolling up and down in case the screen is too small for it. It seems then that the transition from the dark in the front to the light far back does something more than the problems here and there.

Cheers and have a nice Sunday!

Congratulations for making the front page Nick!!!!

I know it isn't the reason for being here, but it sure is nice to get some recognition every once and a while. Maybe someone other than a bot, really is monitoring the images for recognition after all. :)

"The slap from the inside..." That is a great way to put it. I suppose Jack London described it as "The Call of the Wild"

About the crop... I see no reason why we can't have ten different versions of the same image, with changing moods and subject emphasis. All can stand on their own merit. It is interesting to do that and then show others and ask their opinion.

Nick Karagiaouroglou Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:127263} 4/25/2008
No, it' not uncertainty, Gustavo. It's the principle of indecision! ;-)

I need some decision function from sequential statistics, but Wald told me that the decision to choose some decision funtion is up to me. And the decision to choose some decision function for choosing some decision function is also up to me. And so on... ;-)

I think now that they are two partially different images, Gustavo. Their styles are partally incompatible to each other, and so any ordering principle of the two of them on a single axis will be only problematic. :-/ The problems is that they are also not completely orthogonal to each other. I can't compare them directly, but I also can't say that they are completely different things. Somewhere inbetween.

Cheers,

Nick

P.S.: I don't make things complicated. I *am* complicated! ;-)

Hi Andre!

Same goes on in my mind considering the image. But the longer I look at the new crop the better my mind gets comfortable with that. They seem to me like two completely different images now. I guess, it's like you said some time ago. The resulting effect of a crop can be huge, even if the crop seems to be not as big in size. Sometimes I can hardly understand why it is that, but a small omission or addition can really change the image completely.

About the movie again, and in a quite general view, there had to be more such movies. They have that kind of power that really grows on you as the time passes by. My best friend in Greece always said to me, that "The slap from the inside is mute but you here the music much better." ;-) Well, perhaps such movies are indeed "slaps from the inside". I think this is why such movies and their protagonists can evolve to cults.

I'll try to avoid strange mushrooms and strange berries. Best of all, change direction when I see them ;-)

BTW, reminds me of my goold old German teacher, Klaus, who was a certified expert for mushrooms. Well, some day he got his toxic poisoning along with all his family. Thanks heavens it was not too late for them, but they spent some months in the hospital, connected to all kinds of machines and apparats with wires and pipes and the like. Some of these mushrooms can be devlish if you don't know exactly what you're doing - or even when you know exactly what you're doing. So I only collect them in the beautiful area of the next supermarket! ;-)

Cheers!

Nick Karagiaouroglou Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:127263} 4/24/2008
And I still thinbk the same as you do, Gustavo, but perhaps also I got too used in the look and feel of this image. The suggested crop by Dave and Andre has also something more balanced, but as you say the original has a bigger impact of dynamics.

And I am jumping back and forth between the two, and can't make up my mind. But on the other hand, why should one always make up his/her mind? Perhaps a superposition of both states is better - like before decoherence in quantum mechanics! ;-)

Cheers!

Andre Denis Andre Denis   {K:66407} 4/24/2008
I think I see what you mean Nick.
Once you get used to an image a certain way, then sometimes the conventional wisdom way seems to be missing something. The new crop is clean and neat, but now we can't help thinking something is missing.
Yeah, that movie has some staying power. It makes you think about it for a long time after it is over. A very unfortunate ending to a life that only just started. I found out that it is becoming a trend for some students to follow the same trips that he took and even have their pictures taken beside the old bus in the same pose as an image found on an undeveloped roll of film in his camera. He has become a sort of cult figure.
Two things to stay away from, strange mushrooms and strange berries. :)

Cropped after Dave's and Andre's idea - or was it Andre's and Dave's?? ;-)

Nick Karagiaouroglou Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:127263} 4/23/2008
Oh no, I did it again? I am sorry David, eerrrm, I mean, Andre! ;-)

I am glad to have both opposite opinions about this one, Andre! It's exactly what happened in the local photo club about this one. There was only "Keep it" and "Crop it off" but nothing inbetween, and that makes it interesting.

I attached the cropped image here and it is a bettering in many ways to me too, especially considering balance of light. But I can't prevent a bit of raising raising an eyebrow and producing some kind of "mmmhhh" sound when I look at the crop. The very deep blue foreground going into the dark right in front of my shoes seems to be missing to me. Perhaps I got too used to that? I must keep on looking the crop for some time for a more unbiased reaction.

But still, this kind of being unable to decide has also its benefits. It seems to dictate further observing, and this is already a good thing to do.

Thanks a lot and have a nice day!

Nick

P.S.: I watched the movie "Into the wild". A very strong one in all its non-spectacular making. Well, I think I know now why you insisted that I should see it. Now I must be very careful what kind of berries I eat! ;-) ... or :-| .... or perhaps also :-/ .... or even :-O !!!

To creo que la zona oscura, en forma de halo o de viñeta, abajo, es muy buena, a mí me gusta, da apoyo a la composición y guía la mirada hacia arriba, por ahí la silueta del pato distraiga un poco....

And here I am still thinking about the one stream that tells me that the dark part on the bottom is good, and the other one that tells me that it is not as good, Gustavo! I am ambivalent still.

At least it *does* fire up some discussion and movement, ey? ;-)

Which brings me in the delightful position of having two diametrically opposed opinions on this one, Dave! There has been only extreme opinions about this one from all friend photographers around here. One half says "keep it", the other half says "crop it off".

I must sit and think of it, I guess! But how much would you crop off the bottom/foreground?

Thanks a lot!

Hi Nick,
I think I agree with Dave on this one. (Maybe that's why you used to get our names mixed up sometimes :)
I think anything below the duck's head doesn't really add to the image. Other than that it looks fine.

A nice variation on the shot, Nick, although I'm not sure if all the water area in the foreground is really necessary for the composition.
