Hi Nick, Basically I posted this for the composition and the evening tones of the sky. I liked the colors of the clouds against the dark outline of the tree. This was taken with a Point and Shoot and was also hand held at slow shutter. Technically flawed but a good point for discussion
for those willing to really critique it. Thanks for the time of the reverse engineering and soul searching. I always appreciate your in depth approach. Here is the out of camera image before I played with it. No sharpening or saturation.
Be well, Stan

The tree in question?

Hi Stan!

Surely we just sit here and direct each other's attention to such things - this is what has to be done always.

Indeed there are some sharp parts of the tree. My overall impression remains the same, so either it is motion blur or perhaps also the DoF was too narrow for including the whole tree. (Or of course also both.) BTW, motion blur would apply more likely to the smaller, thinner branches that of course move more in the wind. The main trunk is likely to move less or even not at all, except of course if it is a hurricane, in which case it can also fly! ;-) But even the main trunk has those "smudged" contours, which seems to be the result of a too narrow DoF if one also considers that other parts of the tree are indeed in focus.

Well, backward engineering has its charmes, doesn't it? ;-) BTW, just out of my curiosity, what was the reason for you to still upload it, when you at the same time were aware of the problems? The colors perhaps? (They are really very nice!) Or the indeed strange kind of look?

Cheers!

Nick

Hi Nick, thanks for the detailed comment. Actually it was very windy when I took this shot. When I look at it I see some of the tree out of focus and some of it not.. Maybe my old eyes. The bark is also very curly on the tree and gives it a strange appearance. Not excuses but maybe some explanation to fit the critique.

Quite "classical" for the black silhouettes in front of the grat tones of the evening sky, Stan. The tree surely was a good subject considering both shape and also color for complementing the sky itself, avoiding monotony and giving the image tension.

But the tree is terribly out of focus. Was that your intention for a "different" look? I think it would be better to have it with crispy contours against the sky.

Cheers!

Nick
