This background I find a lot more pleasing, although it would have been nice if it had been solid brick. I found it very rewarding to stop before I took a picture and take a good look at everything in the frame, not just my subject, to make sure that the horizon was straight, that there were no annoying things sticking into the frame.
Nice detail and pose.
