Derek,
I love shallow DOFs which I think I've seen your name enough for you to realize this about my work. So I love this - this emerging from a blur so to speak.
I also like the graininess of this to me the graininess is a bonus it adds to the dreamy almost foggy feel in this image.
But best of all is the lack of detail which makes this almost a line drawing in feeling brings us down to the essentials of this plant and bud...
Of course, I have a hibiscus shot that feels like this (imo) so maybe I am biased and should just shut-up! ;)

no digital camera John... SLR and a few toys to get macro -extension tubes, close-up filters...- all this adaptors for the lens affect greatly to the DOF, but I already knew this before shooting... scanner could also be blamed for decrease in quality... print looks better... the grain is due to fast film (400 ASA) is my favourite film, as I can use it in great amount of occasions...

I like your composition here; it seems like your photo suffers from too little DOF, as very few things in the picture are really in focus (you may have intended this?). I think what bothers me most, though, is the graininess in the out-of-focus areas. Is this purposeful, or is it due to overly high ISO setting on your digital camera?
