Just saw your Lampost, Jim. Thought it was great, but this is more compelling to me. Just one thought - take it easy! We don't want you to get tendonitis or carpel tunnel. If you do, I have a bag of tricks to help, but best to avoid it in the first place. Attached is my daughter's response to a cold morning in a friend's Paris flat when it snowed in April (2001). - Mister Ken

I just keep coming back to this image .. I have already left one comment but didnt feel it was enough ... This is where I want to be , I want my photography to make people stop the way this image made me stop .... I am pretty new to photoshop and I read the list of how you created this image and I was proud I could understand it . Could you tell me any good books that I might read or programs that might help me out . I live in a small town and the schoolds here are no good to me ... I read but I am past all the information they have to offer . I think I am going about it all wrong . Any help you could give me would be great !

Jim, I'm embarrassed that I chose you to leave one of my few one word comments without looking at your portfolio. Your work is amazing to me. Simple, elegant, sometimes humorous. You have great vision that makes for a true artist. And your generosity in sharing your techniques is uncommon even here. Thanks for sharing your work. This picture is perfectly balanced and tells so many diverse stories. Excellent stuff. Respectfully -Todd

Jim - had to comment again. This is so wonderful; I just keep coming back to it. This is a very powerful image and one that makes me VERY jealous. I only wish I could create something so beautiful. This is why I want to be proficient in PS. But I have a long way to go..........I dont even fully understand your explanation though I know it is thorough and complete. Great job. I am glad it has gotten the recognition it deserves. AWESOME!!

Jimm - this is absolutely stunning. Very Very Beautiful. The surreal feeling is incredible. I can see alot of work and time went into this and it is WONDERFUL. One of my very favorite pictures. It has been added to my favorites and I see that I am not alone. I am glad you have been in the "blue" state of mind because otherwise we may not have seen this. I cant say enough how great this is.

This is definitely my favorite so far of all your recent "blue" works! The effects are great. I like the softness and the way you've played with light and dark. Lovely, delicate, and perfectly charming. Now this could be an illustration in a children's book!

Jim after reading your description of how you acheived this, I have to say it is a lot of work but well worth it. The description was very precise and I am going to try some of your ways in the future, I have a couple flaming pear plug-ins I must start using them more, best regards - Richard.

i think you did an excellent job, something just came to mind, i mean the blue effect is stunning, but how about if the sky would look bit dark, and the cloud bit greenish yellow or grey.

Hi Jeff:
Willing and eager to share. I usually try to include abbreviated details in the "about" description, but was a little pressed for time when I posted this earlier.
The photo was taken at a B&B in London's West End. The little girl had been spending her summer in Paris, and was watching English language cartoons on TV for the first time in weeks, which explains her trance-like state. She was wrapped in a white sheet because it was a typically dank English morning.
Aside from the duotoning, which involves desaturation and the colorization of multiple layers with slightly differering hues, the key steps involved the background "sky," the diffusion on the girl, and the luminous rays entering from the windows.
There was considerable basic touchup to the image. Not the least of which was removing a cluttered coffee table from the foreground, copying and pasting the radiator from the right onto the left side of the image to conceal one of those English-valet sytle cloths racks, and some perpective correction.
The cloudy, starry sky was done with the Flaming Pear Glisserado filter. You can acheive the same result in PS -- but Glisserado has a random create function that produces ten or fifteen vastly different alternatives in the matter of minutes. Once you've selected the basic "look" you can then fine tune by increasing and decreasing features such as depth, sharpness, volume of clouds, number of stars, etc. -- all from one panel with a dozen or so sliders. So, in a about five minutes you end up with an atmospheric layer that might have taken a couple of hour in PS.
The Glisserado layer was then painted into the windows using a blending mode (probably overlay) and a reveal-all layer mask.
For the diffusion glow, I first tried applying the distort>diffustion layer to the entire image and blending it back. When that didn't work, I selected the couch and girl, duplicated them, ran the filter, and then layer masked the diffused image back into the overall scene at reduced opacity.
Oh, yes, I almost forgot the "glow." I tought long and hard about making it from a single light source, but in the end, the multiple-source Hollywood approach won out.
The actual technique involved making a new layer, applying a black fill, making the layer invisible and using the marquis tool and shift key to select the three intersecting glow zones, making the layer visible again and applying a very wide feather zone from the select menu and, finally, doing a gradient fill with two very closely related blue hues. The result was then layer blended in screen mode and the opacity gradually reduced until the glow was subtle but distinct.
There may be an easier way, this is just the one I dreamed up based on my style of PS work.
That's about it. Hope this makes sense. If not, perhaps I can clarify. Best, Jim

"Blissful Solitude". Wonderful, dream-like art which stops me from my present reality, and ponders the moment you've created here. A wistful scene which allows me to escape into the world you?ve mastered. Great piece of work here. If only for a slightly more believable perspective, you may wish to change the light entering the windows to come all from the same direction. Otherwise, it takes on more of a created, ?Hollywood? look. I?d love to know more how you did this. Are you willing to share more?

One of the most creative and well executed images I've seen in a long time! There is nothing to improve on... this is magic! The soft light coming in the window to dance on the girl on the couch is so beautiful and peaceful... what I imagine a night dreaming with the fireflies would be like! Thanks for sharing!

If I could rate this highe I would, it is so beautiful, I have added it to my favourites and I absolutely love it. The composition is wonderful and the pseudo lighting is done to perfection, it looks very much light moonlighting but with a nice degree of subtlety. Jim you have officially excelled yourself - Richard.
