is it me, or is this a composite of two different shots? and if so, what was the intent? just doesn't make sense to superimpose a model on a shot of an umbrella.

I think you need a reflector for the right side of the model's face... it's quite dark on that side, and having the dark umbrella doesn't help. The pose looks a little awkward as well... try positioning your model on a bit of an angle, so one shoulder is further back than the other. With her straight on to the camera she feels 2 dimentional and flat. And thirdly, the umbrella is floating on her shoulder. She should either have one hand up to hold it, or you should crop a little closer so that we can't tell that it's balancing on her shoulder.
Since you are new at this, I think you've done a nice job. She will be happy with these pictures. But to make these stand out you need to pay attention to the minor details (floating umbrella, catchlights in both eyes...)
Have fun experimenting, and I look forward to seeing the progress!~

nice portrait! a small ciritc: I just don't like the way her hair are floating on her right and the shadow of the umbrella on the left arm. Anyway, it's really a good shot! Congrats, Andrea
