I keep coming back to these old (to usefilm) images. You're right, Phillip, about LF macro having a certain "something" that's hard to describe but very appealing. I'd love to start making slow, steady images. One of these days....

Thanks Debbie and all for the nice comments. This was a test photo that I took with the idea of making a series of large prints related to games and gaming. It looks like it will work, all I need is some green felt and I can start shooting the series for real.

There is something about the clarity of large format macro photography that makes it really stand out. Thanks again for the comments, keep an eye open for the new series.

And Jason, thanks for noticing the numbers, was wondering if anyone would. ;=]

I have looked at this one so so so many times and can't believe I've never commented..I just love it for some reason.

With all the attention being paid to the technical merits of this photo, I thought I would point out a more subtle detail. The most important two numbers (for those of us who love craps) are displayed: 7 & 11 I think any other numbers would have lessened the impact of the photo - at least for somebody who loves to gamble such as myself. Beautiful job!

This is the kind of result I aspire to, even if I didnt understand a bit of your explaination about camera settings. I will study the lighting of this however, absolutely perfect!

Vladimir, The shot was actually pretty easy, I used an overhead softbox about a foot above the dice, and one softbox on each side at about 45 degrees into the dice. I then left the shutter open and fired the flash 4 times, then closed the shutter. The hard part was getting the flash balanced out so that the whites wouldnt totally wash out and become totally clear in the transparency. I took 2 test polaroids to verify the setup before I used the film. I exposed 3 sheets of film, one at 3 pops, 4 pops, and 6 pops. The one at 4 pops seemed to be the one. Shooting of course was done in near darkness although at F32 with that much extension I dont think that the ambient light would be a problem.
