A poet would identify a metaphore.. the old man in his late years and the naked trees...
Beautifully done, but yes.. a bit of cropping in the base would make it look much better.

Interestingly I find the image more optimistic than the title suggests. Something about the man's body language says he is content and of course the scene is very pretty.
I too would go for a crop to the bottom, perhaps at just above the larger black spot.

Beautiful shot, but not sad, however melancholy, an old man that walks with a lot of dignity, it is a beautiful image which represents a beautiful subject and respects him. I think it would have been great also in B&W. Bye Max

I like the yellow tonality for a simple and touching image. Maybe I would crop a bit in the botton part (it's a bit empty).
