For portrait work also try using a program called NeatImage. You can download it at www.neatimage.com This will help you smooth out the skin tones and make a more pleasent looking portrait.
Attached is an example.

Chris I definately like what you did to the photo, I guess I just wanted it to look like the photo itself did.... but I am also still new at using Photoshop 7.0

I think your on the right track with your images, the composition here on this one is very nice. What is wrong is the scan, there is too much saturation and the image is soft. I downloaded it and worked with it in PS and tried to level out the colors and sharpen it a little.
What image editing software are you using?

Now remember I dont have the best equipment to work with haha! Chris I am currently using..... Visioneer One touch 6600? And I'm not happy with it! But that just goes to show you not to always go the easy way out :P

The colors seem fine but the image is very soft. What scanner are you using?
