The shadow on the eye is too much indeed, but it's the scanning problem :(
Of course this would not change the constrast, just make everything brighter a bit.

I also adore this kind of crop, and I did many attempts, even good succeeded.
In your shot I just find a bit to strong shadow, maybe you can work it with lower contrast. But this is just my taste.
