Actually have to suggest that the initial damage is caused by the H2S gases that are emitted from the sewerage which attacks the concrete... and the as it becomes brittle... the excavation does the final damage... but several meters lower... there are certainly other artifacts... that will be smuggled out of Greece to be sold in Geneve or Dusseldorf! (May the Greeks be complete for the Olympics... as otherwise there will be awful smell... generated from the left overs of all the visitors!)

@ In Transit, totally agree with you, only beauty is not enough to show... and the damage is perhaps caused from the age, it was in the middle of Athen, closed to a Metro station and I'm pretty sure that the exvacation found something really old and at that time of origin there were perhaps only water in pipes...who knows ;)

There was one prior comment questioning 'beauty'...
All photos do not have to be of beauty... they may present sadness... grief... opportunity... either gained or lost... st cetera... while this is documentary.
I would tend to either have this hi-contrast BW or as you have created but in a sepia tone...
By the way tyhe adamage was either from the excavator... or more likely the corrosive gases from the sewerage... the smell is the telling truth... and not from simple potable or drinking water!
