About Part II: The dark side (of me). Throughout my life (so far), with all the things I do and would like to do, I'm struck by moments and feelings of gloom; Quite opposite to my normal optimism, I contemplate all the things that can go wrong. Those moments always have been the forerunner of a change; ranging from drastic changes to minor changes and new interests. When these moments pass, I revive with unbridled energy and commitment to the new phase. During one of these moods, I got inspired. I walked into the woods at night, set up my tripod, hooked the wire thingy up to my camera, set it at Bulb and shot away into the night. I slowly walked in front of the camera and with the flash in my hand, ready to fire, I flashed from below. Then I waited another 6 minutes.... The far from (technically) perfect result does depict those rare moments of gloom.

Hi Ryan, thanks for your comment. I shot this one at night; the yellow tone in the sky is created by the long exposure and the streetlights in a town nearby, reflecting off the clow clouds. I used a separate flash (not attached to the camera) to light up my face. Maybe a torch would've been better, as that flash over exposes most of my face... Hope this helps, and Looking foreward to what you come up with!

Cheers,

Hugo

WOW, this is ingenious. What a concept! The effect is amazing, very "Hitchcockian". I browsed your portfolio and it is incredibly unique and diverse.

Hugo,

See there you go it is all there in the darkness comes the flashes of brilliant intuition...

I find the light and disembodied near distortion of your face strange - perhaps it is a moment of self-perception better understood when one knows you...

Dear Hugo, wonderful if not somewhat scary portrait! You certainly got the affect you were looking for in this magnificent shot, Weird Photograph, Mystical and truly Scarry, Really good job!

strange and wondeful, the affect you achieved through long exposure is unique and does indeed tell dark tales

Hey, everyone has their dark moments, its human nature!

Great effect, it looks like you're a ghost. I love the different colors, especially the yellow background.

Well done, looking forward to the third one.

Hugo, you're going to give me nightmares! I get those moments also, and your picture
does indeed portray gloominess! Wow! Are you going to have a "light side of you" to
cheer us up after this series?? :) You did a wonderful job on this!

Hi Hugo ?

I wish everyone went into such detail as you sometimes do on your comments. To answer as best I can with regard to Poppy Pair, in the original the tone and color was too similar to the subject flower, so that it could have been confusing. By selecting the background flower, then bringing down its tone I felt it would bake the subject stand out even more. Of course, the background flower was out of focus which helped.

How did you know I altered the background flower? You have a sharp eye and great familiarity with Photoshop, I think. I will have to get better so that I can completely fool you!

Hugo, so very interesting this is! And so honest is your information! I think we all have those moments of gloom (for sure I do), but many won't admit it openly, thus choosing not to deal with it. We are surely complex beings! Always new phases...hopefully to enjoy!!

So, this inspired you to a most ineresting Photograph. I was surprised to see this one, and glad to get a glimpse of you! Very good!

Happy times to you!
Lori :)

ps...thank you so much for your comment, I appreceiate it very much!!

very creepy... i love it! your head looks almost detached from your body. very clear and crisp. love the green glow in the background. excellent work, as usual, hugo.

i have to ask (email response ok): how do you calculate your shutter speed for something like this? i really enjoy low-light photography and would like to enter 30+ second world. i'm headed back to death valley next month and want to try some things.

thank you for your comment on my deer. i have to agree with you 100%. unfortunately, i tended to take photos with my subjects centered. i'm working on it... ;^)

Groeten, Lex.

The monster lighting does two things . . . the first is the obvious, but the second is that your head seems disembodied, floating above your torso. Maybe that is fitting. I am not going to gate this as a photo. It wouldn't be fair or appropriate, but I appreciate your bottomless creativity!
