About	The view towards the floating Torii, off Miyajima island, is said to be one of three best views in Japan. It would certainly be the most photographed so when I was there last year one balmy afternoon I tried to achieve something a little out of the ordinary. This involved getting wet up to the waist and wading out to the gate, which I was surprised was still permitted until I actually reached the base of this huge ancient wooden structure. Here I found an assortment of coins pushed into the timber, I would guess for lucky charms.

sean, great story. i love your alternative view (they're usually better than the "accepted" classic) and very well executed. bonus for going the extra mile to get this wonderful perspective. love the textures and color. simply wonderful!

Maybe they thought it would light up or play a tune if you inserted a coin :)
