Excellent color processing Jim, I've used this technique several times but not that well. Just an idea: Have you tried to make everything B&W except for the flowers themselves? or maybe decrease the saturation of the green color a bit to make the emphasis on the flowers. I don't know how well that will turn but I thought of sharing the idea with you. Regardless of that, well done.

this is a great start. One thing I would suggest to make the idea a little stronger: Inverse your selection of the colored part and try making the busy black and white background a little less busy, possibly by blurring or lightening, this will make the flowers really POP and not compete with background. cheers, nicole

Jim, thanks for your comments on my 'Tiger Longwing'. Appreciate you looking. I came to check out your portfolio and want to say that you have some very nice images included. I like the effect on this one, also really enjoyed the Niagra Falls photos - esp 'water power'.

This is great, a very pretty little plant. I love how you have done the selective coloring, making it your main focus yet still with a lot of beautiful detail in the B/W. Alison

Thank you for the kind words. I did this entirely with the magic wand tool - it took hours. After selecting the portions of the picture I wanted to remain colored, I inverted the selection and desaturated it. I have not learned to use masks yet. Sounds like they could save me some time.

Stunning selective colorization! Did you do this with selections, or through masking?. I did the one below here through masking - the effect is the same, but I think masking gives you more control (also used PSP8. In my picture I duplicated my main layer. Colorized and blurred the background layer, adjusted the top layer to increase saturation and with the red flower at the top created a new mask that hides all, then masked in the red flower ) - This way I find it easier to select (mask) just the pixels I want using a brush, instead of the selection tools (which I dont like a lot). See the masking example in PSP8 - that's how I figured out how to do it.
