Hi atalay, Thanks for the comment, although I don't understand what "but ıt need litle big place." means. Can you explain it to me again? Thanks! Kim

Hi Kim, Well composed shot, concentration at it's best.... I think the blue tones are quite good in the reflection in the water, but it seems to be a slight blue film over the entire image. Could that be the scan? Dirck has a point with his rework. It revives the tones a bit.
Cheers,
Hugo

I'm so jealous you got so close - we have some great blue herons that roost close by, but you can't get anywhere near them. Little black specks with my 200mm. I love the bright blue water and the lily pads. I think you did a good job with this tough lighting situation. Isn't Provia 400 great?

Well worth the muddy, stinky feet! :p
Being so late, my one criticism of the photo (the blue!) has already been identified and rectified. Ain't Usefilmers great? The placidity of the water and the haphazard lillypads create a wonderfully textured background.
I'll post my version, once I get around to scanning it. Just remember - you got closer (and more detail too!)

Thanks Dirck... I took it into PS7 and went through the Colour Balance treatment... looks a lot more realistic now. It's weird how until you see something fixed you never even know that it was broken. Cheers

Hi Kim! I use Paint Shop Pro, so the controls are a little different than in Photoshop, but on this one I took the quick route and used the 'Automatic Color Balance' tool, in which you can have it automatically remove any color cast. The manual way would be to go to Color > Adjust > Color Balance (in PSP) then adjust the sliders for the midtones and highlights. On this one, moving the Cyan Red to about +10 (toward Red), the Magenta Green to abt. +10 (Green) and the Yellow Blue to -8 (Yellow) had about the same effect as the automatic route. As I said, your software may work a bit differently, but the concept should be pretty much the same. Give 'er a try!

Hey Stefan! You're right about the Great Blue not being blue - rather they are mostly gray with some white and black. I think this one appears so blue because of the overall color cast in the photo. The Little Blue is uniformly dark blue all over, with a smooth head and breast. Oddly enough (I read) they are completely white when young!) The Great Blue has a black top of the head - with a dashing couple of feathers jutting out to the back - a white face, then mostly gray with black and white patches. They also have a kind of a 'bib' of narrow, lighter feathers that stick out around the lower neck and breast. Beautiful birds!

Hi Dirck - I didn't think the great blue ever was quite this blue, but then I am not a real birder. Can you tell what you go on to identify this bird? (Kim, plese excuse me while I try to educate myself)

Hi Dirck! Thanks for taking a look... can you tell me what you did to this to take away some of the blue cast? I'd love to know. I took a quick glance at your heron nest, and I'll be sure to comment, I'm just in the middle of work right now and have a second or two to write you back! (bad Kim, I know!) Cheers

Oh, and not to be too picky :) but this is a Great Blue Heron, not a Little Blue (sorry Stefan)

Great nature shot, Kim! That's so cool that he posed so nicely for you - they can be pretty skittish! I'm lucky enough to have quite a few of these around here, including some nests in the cypresses in the lake where I live:

Your shot is beautifully composed, and in a perfect setting! My only suggestion would be to correct the slight blue color cast, like this

Beautiful little blue heron - good work to get this close. Having the sun almost directly behind the bird caused a loss of detail in the body I'm afraid.

The heron surely does look patient. The still water shows that he wasn't moving a scintilla as you crept closer! Nice framing.
p.s. Baby ducks are photo worthy too!
