About The famous Gate to Chinatown in San Francisco, in a very personal view. Not too much blur in here to upload it in the "blurry image project".

Changed the original toning, added some enhancements to make the image look CRISPY as possible. Hope you like it.

Comments are appreciated a lot.

Hi Thilo, I see exactly what you mean. Good choice, the conversion does emphasise the mood. Very good rework, too, the trees stand out better against the black sky. Much better visible than in the colour version. The contrast boost does make it much stronger, and now I also see why the lights seem so bright and busy.

When I commented on the postprocessing in my initial comment, I had no idea it was this elaborate. Very well done!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Uwe,

grüssle, der uwe

Dear Mary Sue,

thanks for your kind words. You nailed it down with your analysis: I think that the colored original (which I posted in the meantime as an alternative) distracts a tad from the real mood here. at least my mood when watching the image ;-)

Take care, Thilo

Dear Hugo,

thanks for the elaborate comment. Enclosed you will find the original image. The main reason for my rework was the mood factor. It's not that I don't like the original stuff. But I think the rework increases my feelings in that situation. Be curious to know what's your opinion ;-)

Holy cow, Thilo! There is a LOT going on here! This is a fabulously rich shot, with so many tones and contrast.....eye candy, with movement to spare! ..Brad

I've been to this same spot many times, and you captured the mood exactly as it is. The use of a slow shutter is the perfect choice to illustrate the hustle bustle. Although Hugo's wish for a color version is understandable, the B/W version seems to reduce some of the distractible clutter and puts more focus on the lights and motion.

Wonderful shot.

Maybe it's more a question of overall contrast rather than a light/dark issue. Either way it is a really cool shot.

Hi Thilo, There's a lot going on in this shot. Not only the tail lights (or headlights for that matter) running through the gate up the hill, but also the lights in chinatown. Well composed. I wonder why you converted this one to a sepia tone. I think colour would've brought the place a bit more to life. It does have a Ghost-like quality, and it does create a very ominous atmosphere. It would be nice to see the original shot, just for comparison....

Very creative solution! Well captured, and very good postprocessing, as usual.

Cheers,

Hugo

Dear Erik,

does it really look that bright at your monitor? Even at my monitor @ work (which is very bold), this picture seems to be dark. hmmh?

Take care, Thilo

NIce view to a familiar spot for me. For my tastes it might be a bit too bright for a night shot....maybe a touch more contrast?

Really great also the tones selected to show the image.
Not too light, not too dark, perfectly balanced.
