I'm sure they don't build units like this anymore.The Henry Bennett centre where all the patients were transferred to after Tokanui closed is a much more modern unit. Tokanui, built in 1912 has a much more institutional feel to it and unfortunately it also carries with it the stigma that is associated with mental institutions of last century.
Although removing them from the idylic rural setting of Tokanui to a small area on the grounds of the Waikato hospital doesn't make much sense to me.
I never worked at Tokanui but I was accompanied on a number of occasions by a woman who was a psychiatric nurse there during the mid 1960's through to the early 70's. She has since left the profession and now lectures at a University in the UK.
Sadly some of the events she spoke of that took place there left me a little taken back to say the least.
On a brighter note, the overall reaction that I have received to these photographs from people that have been associated with Tokanui has been positive so that is nice.

Love it. Makes me happy. Despite the sky and the gloom it looks a great place to be. Of course it would need a few years curse lifting, blessing and tohunga attention but big ups for the mouldy kauri panels, and thank goodness your outside. I've been in the dungeons at carrington but never seen as horrific interiors as your series.

Have enjoyed looking through your photo's. They don't build forensic units like this any more. I bet there are some stories to be told here. Did you work here. I currently work at an acute psychiatric ward in Dunedin. Any way great photo. Oozes with history.
