Thanks for your comments and I'm glad you are enjoying this series of images.
To answer your question, Tokanui, where the hospital is situated is a very small rural community (just a few houses) about 45 minutes south of where I live. The institution shut down in 1998 and has laid empty ever since. I had driven past it a number of times and always thought about trying to get in to photograph there.
I decided to turn up one day with my camera and jumped the fence which has attached a "DO NOT ENTER" sign displayed on the front gate.
The grounds of the hospital are large (over 100 acres) and I wandered around the outside taking it all in, the silence was eerie and I must admit to being a bit freaked out by the feel of the place. I eventually came across a security guard who wanted to know what I was doing, I told him of my intentions and that I wanted to photograph especially the interiors and as luck would have it the security guard on duty that day was more than happy to oblige.
They work twelve hour shifts on their own and I think the gentleman was relieved to have some company. Patrolling an empty psychiatric hospital on your own would drive you nuts, pun not intended. I returned to the hospital regularly over a 4 month period when he was on duty. There is so much there to photograph and I though it important to document it before the place is gone forever.
