Cheryl: This calf was with its mom and was only interested in munching on the willows in the stream bed. The cows will charge if you seem to be menacing the calf but it's rare to have a moose in Colorado do anything other than attempt to get away. The bulls will charge in rutting season but one must always use common sense and stay well away as they are all very large creatures. We've had deer and elk charge more often as they are far more commonly encountered here. Thanks for all your kind comments.

Beautiful - I hope you had some distance as I hear they will charge (obviously you are alive so we don't need to sweat it - I just want you here to share more incredible photos).

Paul: No guarantees but if you are in Colorado my wife and I have always found the moose in two locations not far from our town. I would be glad to guide you.

These are the smaller mountain moose species, not the large Alaskans. They are still quite impressive, however. They were reintroduced to Colorado in the early 1970s and we have even had sightings in our small town, walking down Main Street.

Jeroen: Don't feel too bad. My wife and I went to Alaska in 1999 and saw no moose. We had to go back in 2003 to visit our son and saw many, many moose. You have to be in the right place at the right time or you may not see any. They also tend not to be visible during the midday sun.
As with all deer, they like sunrise and sunset to come out and feed.

Jim: We went up yesterday (Monday) and spent the day. We thought about going up the headwaters of the Colorado River but decided to take Hwy 125 north. Glad we did, the viewing was pretty good. We only saw the three moose but we have always had good luck on the pass and on the Laramie River Road past Chambers Lake.

nice shot.
I spent a week looking for moose in Yellowstone and Grand Teton NP and only saw 3 adult females from a long distance...
