About Dervish is one of the top traditional Irish trad bands, so it was a treat to have them perform in a small venue in town. This is Cathy Jordan and Shane Mitchell. The light meter in my camera refuses to work in low light so I simply set it for the slowest shutter and aperture I can shoot at and crossed my fingers.

"shoot and pray" - will remember that :-) Glad you see the shadows, it was one of the things that I saw and liked while at the show, but didn't do a very good of capturing.

stefan, very cool! i love when those shoot & pray photos come out. love the mood created by the slight blur and grain. i also like the composition. looking at the band through a tangle of wires and mic stands gives me a feeling of place. dig all the shadows too, btw. very cool shot!

take care,
tom

I really like the candidness of this shot... I feel like I'm there, but that the players don't really care if anyone is watching (or listening). They're off in their own world, strumming... getting lost in the music.
Here I really like the jumble of mics and stands... it adds to the raw feel but there are still open windows to each of their faces.

Hi Stefan,

a very cool and intimate shot. like it how you included the cables and micros to create some distance between the viewer and the singers. really good decision.

lighting is fine by me. great job!

Take care,
Thilo

beautiful stage shot (and i certainly like those)... i believe you have a certain style when shooting a theme like that... like in previous pics of yours of performers, you capture fantastic expressions on their faces... always seem swept away by their music and the feelings are intense... love that forest of microphones around as a natural frame... two portraits within one image... fantastic work... emy :)

Stefan, my congratulations!!! Very nice tones and capture of the moment! You are lucky to have beet there. It is true that in concerts the light meter refuses to co-operate especially when there is a light show. You did the best using a wide aperture and a reasonable shutter!
again congratulations for sharing this moment! I can feel their calmness...

I like to see them in their naturel behavior, the deep contrast goes very well in this picture.

Well done, Stefan! I see Verena and Carlheinz beat me to it - I was going to say that the mic stands in the foregoround don't detract at all from this image (as similar foreground elements might in a different situation.) In fact, they adds to the 'intimite' mood of a concert in close quarters - puts you right into the scene! They both look quite engrosed in the music!

Oh, yes! I know that feeling! Even with a working light meter it's hard to meassure the correct light. The good thing on venues like that or also Jazz, is that you don't have to deal with a "light show". Sometimes (e.g. when strobes are involved) I have my doubts if my meter is quick enough to deal with the always changing light situations.
However, your "metering" was excellent and I see that you didn't correct much in PS. The mic stands doesn't bother me much. The atmosphere and expression is awesome and that's the most important thing; at least for me.
Very nice, Stefan!

Thank you Verena - I'm glad you saw the intention of shooting through the jumble here.

Hi Stefan,

after my own experience with on stage and 3200 I can only say, crossed fingers worked out.

I often said during the shot, oh sh.. all this micro standing all around, in this case they work very well as a frame inside the photos, surrounding the face.

Great shot!

Cheers,
Verena

very good framing and composition -- as luck would have it you caught it right on. the slight blur helps the feeling of the image - K
