About	I have very little to no experience in product photography I would love some suggestions or advice. I'm trying to capture the surface texture to better show off the pyramid structures.

Thank you for the quick replies. Part of the problem is the actual subject being a foam pad about 7mm thich and black it is hard to capture tonal changes it seems. the surface pattern is small as well

Me neither, I would experiment with differnt lighting, flash etc. perhaps a mocro lens to get in good and tight. If you do not have a macro lens you can try the reverse telephoto trick. Just some ideas.

I'm no expert but one small light directed so the shadows fall in between the pyramids might help????
