it 'looks like' is not 'it is' or 'it must be'.
As I am the only one that sees and dislikes the yellow tinge to the area between the ground and the clouds, and I can now see that it exists in the original, I'll refrain from commenting further, on this or any other image.

Here is a copy of the original Nigel as close as I can get it. You will of course appreciate that Usefilm does not allow the posting of raw images. So I have converted this to jpeg directly from the NEF file. I expose to keep detail in the highlights. Sorry but your original statement was that it looked like "two sererate images grafted together badly" which by any definition is a composite. On my CRT monitor the colours do not look "weird" at all.
Have a nice day. John

I didn't say it was a composite. You have explained the weird colours in the sky and you might call that minimal PS manipulation, I don't. Go on, post the original...

Sorry Nigel but I suggest you have another look. This is out of the camera with minimal PS work. Slight crop on the right and slight saturation adjustment to the foreground and desaturation of cyan & blue in the clouds. It is one image and not a composite. Fact is stranger than fiction. Cheers John

like the composition but can't agree with the praise about the amount of PS applied. It looks like two seperate pictures grafted together badly IMO. The colours look wrong. How about posting a subtle (maybe the original?) version, bet it looks better!

Looks like the clouds are going to swoop down and cover the house/land. Pretty cool. ..and it's amazing what a little photoshop will do. The changes really perk up the photo, beautifying it.

Hello John
Thank you very much for your comments and poetics about the otago landscape..even though I come from a very beautiful part of the world, (the north west coast of canada), something about the openness of the landscape in NZ really got me and has stayed with me. i hope to return...this feb/mar. It must be very photographic at this time as you move into spring/summer. (pretty dark and gloomy here at the mo) cheers coral

I'm glad my images bring back memories of NZ Coral.
I have looked through you paintings on your web site. I like your use of colour and light. The light here in the South Island of New Zealand is what appeals to Landscape photographers.
The shorter days of Autumn and Winter often produce the best light.
Some times the dark, lush bush can become a bit overbearing. My favourite area is Central Otago. Here lush bush is conspicuous by its abscence. You can reach out and touch the bones of the land. The sky is big and when the Nor'west wind blows the sky mirrors the land below.
When all human life is extinguished on earth through greed and intolerance, the Central Otago landscape will persist.
Regards John

Hi John, i like your rendition better. Because the one Micheal created makes the clouds the focus where i feel it's the house that needs to be more of the focus supported by the mood of the clouds. What stunning landscape you manage to capture.
Cheers, tim

beautiful shot, John. Just wonderful. I have been wanting to get myself down to NZ for a travelling/photographing holiday for a few years now & your photos only help to enliven the craving for me!!! Ah, well...everything in its time. Thanks, though, for capturing & sharing such beauty for the rest of us. You do an incredible job bringing that landscape alive photo by glorious photo.

But we do see their dwelling places, which is a nice touch and helps to set the scale... The thumbnail doesn't give much idea of the quality of this picture. Love the sweeping curve of the hillside and the fantastic clouds above. Makes me want to visit NZ!

Nice interpretation Michael but it's a bit harsher than the original. If anything mine needs to be softer. Hey thats the fun of shooting raw and using PS CS, repaint the canvas when the mood takes you. Regards John

Massive cloud bank - lovely as could be, especially with the dark undersides. You then partnered that wonderful sky a nice green hill and a house tucked away a little off center.
Seems lonely - and I think this might have been what you were after. Really great.
1. Lower part of the clouds had some yellow - removed to cyan and blue.
2. distant hills were bluish - moved to yellow and red.
3. Foreground grass - brightness, contrast.
4. Sky and clouds - brightness, contrast.

Thanks Michael. Don't confuse alone with lonely. The former is a matter of geography and space, the latter is an emotion that can be mastered.
