From a 1999 trekking trip to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco; I haven't scanned the photos until now! Notice the Polaroid photo in the background, a gift to induce the people to pose for me. The woman on the roof at upper left is watching it all unfold.
Rebecca, you have it about right regarding the bystander! The people (excluding kids) are pretty shy about having their picture taken; that's why the Polaroid was useful. It's a pretty remote village, no electricity, accessible only by mule or foot. It's a popular area for trekking, but any one village probably has at most one or two groups per week pass through, and they generally just walk into town to the "hotel" (actually a spare room in someone's house with a few mats on the floor) and depart early the next morning. So there's not a lot of tourist contact. Interestingly, even these people believe it advantageous to wave a Polaroid slowly in the air while it's developing.
Beautiful gathering. Great colors and lighting. I love their expressions, and the bystander on the roof. She looks as if she isn't sure what's going on, but whatever it is, she's not coming any closer.
