hi Mia, I normally can't get past unsharply focused images, to me, bad focus srtaight away lets down the subject
in this case the main compositional problem is that the bird competes for attention with too many other elements (which is not helped by poor focus) there are too many branches, the sky dissects the bird, tyhe snow being bright draws attention, and no less interesting than the bird
keep compositions simple, and place emphasis on the subject

HI Amy, Thanks so much for taking the time to offer suggestions.. that's why I like to post here.. I'm trying to learn how to take the best pictures I can. I looked thru your portfolio.. AWESOME pictures in there.. looks like we have similar taste.. sure wish I had a job that included travel! You've come a long way from that instamatic.. which is what I'm hoping to do as well! I just bought myself a new Olympus 8 megapixel digital.. and I"m just starting to play with it.. we will see what happens!

Mia, attached is an experimental crop... I also boosted the saturation a bit. Good catch on the cardinal - they are so quick in my backyard that I wouldn't even dream of getting this shot. Amy

I assume the camera is auto or fixed focus in either case you did well getting it this sharp! Those Cardinals move around a bit quickly as well don't they? If it were my picture I'd crop off the top third making it almost square, the blue sky is nice but it's a distraction from the subject. Pretty birds aren't they?!

hi Mia, i find the scharpness not much of a problem, i find it a bit to licht needs more contrast ore use curves for editing.
