Pierre, that's very creative! It's wonderful that you saw the beauty in this simple phenomena and shared it with us. Impressive. Keep them coming.

Hi Mary,

Alright, I'll tell you because I think Shane figured it out.

I was holding a large glass of water up and directly under a bright light. The light refracted into the glass and created those wonderful patterns on the table directly under the glass. Simplicity can be beauty. Here's the give-away image where you can clearly see the glass for reference...

I know, I know. Light shining through a napkin. Shane said kleenex--that;s the one you meant is right..right? Am I right, heh, heh?

Hi Shane,

If I tell you, I'm afraid you'll be disappointed at how dead simple this experiment was. Nothing special (no light painting, no PS alterations). The picture shows what my eyes saw.
I'm sure you'll find out soon!

Hi Mary,

Thanks! I was holding the camera with one hand and the other hand holding the object that produces the effect. I was trying not to swirl it to get the details I was seeing. I also didn't defocus the camera.

If it were #5, and I could see stuff like this through a badly focused lens, I defocus on purpose. It is a beautiful picture.
Mary
It does fit the Magic Light category, but also the Different perspective one, I'd think.

Oh How nice is that! I have it in one of my guesses and you still won't help out! Geeez~!

Okay .... Number 1?

It is a fabulous picture. I'm having trouble figuring it out even after you said one of Shane's guesses is correct. So, if one of his is correct, it's obviously not a light under a heap of mashed potatoes. We see it many times at the dinner table?--You're right, we don't pay attention. Any other clues? I go with something being stirred.

Shane,

One of your latest guess is correct. Everyone sees this effect all the time... many times every day (especially at the dinner table)... but most just don't pay attention to it.

Just ask Larry )

I KNOW! What a fly see's as he approached the speed of light. AKA hitting an oncoming car headlight!

Hi Pierre,

You're assuming that the new posting helps ;o)

1. A defocused flashlight, light painted in circles.
2. Your hand around a flashlight up close to the lens
3. Light behind some kleenex
4. An actual worm hole!!!
5. a light through a badly focused lens...

Pierre Martin   {K:3355} 6/2/2005
Hi Shane,

No, no, no, no (that's too funny!) and no. I'm afraid that it's way simpler than any of that.

Here's another pic of the phenomena. The shapes and intensities constantly changing and in motion.

So.... you're going to make me guess. Okay!
1.A flushing toilet
2.Cream being stirred into coffee
3.Smoke rings
4.a star test for a really badly collimated telescope
Getting close yet ;o)
5. a defocused flashlight while zooming out

Hi Todd!

Thanks!

Nope, that's not it. Although it does very much involves light.

Hi Pierre,

Beautiful shot. A flashlight behind cloth?

Hi Pierre,

This could easily be passed off as an astronomical ) Well done! So ..... pinhole camera or streetlight in the fog?
