Hi Garold, It is a caterpillar, but not that of a black swallowtail butterfly.
The caterpillar is that of the Citheronia regalis moth. The caterpillar is commonly called the Hickory Horned Devil. Pics and info at http://www3.islandtelecom.com/~oehlkew/supplies.htm

This is definitely some type of Swallowtail Butterfly Larva. Probably in its Third or fourth-instar larval stage. I think its a Black Swallowtail but not 100% sure. Usually have to look at the adult stage or the entire life cycle of the insect. I hope this helps. Great photograph Devin and by the way howdy. LOL. Good luck to you.

Devin, It's deinfitely a caterpillar, though I'm not sure which one. He sort of looks like an emperor: http://www.javajane.co.uk/Hairy/slides/emporer.html But... Whatever he is, we don't have them in Northern Idaho. There's a guy named Bill Oehlke with a website where you can contact him with info about where you found it, and maybe send him the link to the image and he will try to ID it for you. http://www3.islandtelecom.com/~oehlkew/catanim.htm
On a side note, I love the photo, but think it would have been better without your hand in the shot. =) -Jorwyn
