About Not 100% for sure, but think this is a prickly pear cactus. This upload is a small cropped portion of a larger shot, but really liked the contrast of the rich reds and the duller cactus color. ISO 100, 27 mm, no flash, 1/200 @ f10. It was a bright sunshiny and HOT day! Taken last month at that little restaurant in WickiUp on the way back from Vegas.

The colours are great. The reds look loke lovely satin balls. I guess I shouldn't try to feel them, though. They are well guarded.

Yes, this is the prickly pear cactus. I grew up in Kansas back when they were abundant before the days of chemical controls. Those spikes can pass through a tennis shoe I can assure you from experience. I have never had jelly made from the fruit but have nibbled the fruit picked directly from the cactus. I have heard it can be used to make wine also but have never sampled that either. Since it was such a hated plant it is hard for me to think of it as pretty, but I can see now that it really is. That color combination is beautiful and a great capture. Thanks for sharing. Del.

Thanks Don - I was really pleased with the way this one turned out. Clean and crisp and didn't have to fiddle with it - except kept changing my mind on how to crop it. Jan

Dang that couldn't be more clear if I was looking at the real thing. Stunning. That's a really interesting shot, beautiful reds.
