About Just a simple snapshot in the train, the kind of thing I usually do with my mobile phone. But I know the mobile isn't up to handling such contrasty subjects. I am VERY pleased with what my new Ultron lens did with it, though. Beautifully sharp but with nice modeling of the facial features and textures of clothing and bags, etc. I did compress the dynamic range a little in PaintShop Pro, but left the contrast strong because that's how it really was...

I like it! great candid shot, nice colour and light, rather obvious these days as to how tech is with everyone, an not a quiet mind in sight! :O)

Glad you liked it, Fadel. Dynamic range is virtually the same thing as contrast, so no wonder you were puzzled by my remark. Actually, though, I said I left the contrast high... but it was even higher before, so I DID use dynamic range compression to reduce the contrast, but not by all that much--just enough to give some shadow detail while leaving those nearly burnt-out highlights untouched. Hope that is clearer.

Excellent shot, that guy could have been taking a picture of you too :) By the way, what do you mean by compressing the dynamic range without affecting the contrast?

The loneliness of the city is well captured here. Each of these three is so engrossed in their own world they seem oblivious to those around them, even to your presence with a camera!!!
This is super commentary on life in our 'westernised' and 'civilised' world...

Whatever happened to the idea of talking to attractive members of the opposite sex when we are lucky enough to be sandwiched next to them? Oh well.... It helps curb population growth I suppose!!!

Nice photo. It reminds my wonderful days at Tokyo. Thanks! Mobile phone camera technology got changed but people didn't ... :-)

One of the exhibitions I saw two weeks ago as part of the Month of Photography (that takes place each year in Bratislava) was the work of a photographer who documented people in what can nowadays be considered their 'natural' environment. The work consisted of three parts: Suburbs, Hypermarkets, and Mobile phones. This photo of yours would fit on that gallery wall perfectly.

This is really great, a super "street" shot, and as I see you turned successfully to people photography now !! ;-))

Yes, John, my Sharp has the same feature. Very useful it is, too, for stealth photography. However, I am having to stop doing this, as there have been a series of crimes based on such "stealth" photographs, and to take them is to invite suspicions and, if reported, a police investigation.

Yes, Roger, the Ultron did a great job and you did well with taking a photo of these three from just a few feet away!!
Excellent work.
Best regards, Chris

Roger, this photo could have been taken on the train that traveles a block from my apartment heading to Los Angeles. Young people stay in constant communications around the world I guess. It always amazes me when I drive past a high school at the end of the education day and all the kids are walking around with a phone in their ear. They are apparently talking to each other!

Hi, Alan. Nice to "meet" you outside the forums. I thought of trimming the arm on the left, but it leaves the young man too near the edge of the frame, and you can't balance it by trimming from the other side without eating into the image of the young woman. This is probably the least bad crop...

Roger, this is certainly an interesting subject, our fascination with our gadgets, and particularly the cell phone. I have a theory that we are so caught up in the rat race which is meaningless, that we think of the cell phone as kind of a life line to our families, friends and people that matter to us.
I agree that your camera and you did a great job with this one. I like the contrast, and youve captured the involvement in their faces. Great job indeed. One possible consideration would be to crop out the extra elbow at the left.

This is very funny (and would have been funnier still if it HAD been taken with a mobile that could handle it, because that would have made you one of them!). Incidentally, I don't know if other cameras have this, but on the A2 the screen flips up through 90 degrees, so I can look vertically down to take shots and people just don't realise...

Very funny how youngsters are busy with their cell phones.
Great shot but difficult with the beacklight. Very well done.

You also managed to not let the back light wash everything out or make their faces have too much shadow to view. Very well done. When I looked at the subjects busy with their own phones, yet so crammed into their seats I thought, "So near and yet so far." Thanks for sharing. Rodney

What a great shot!
I wonder if any of them is texting the person sitting next to them! (Don't laugh...my sons have done this).
