Tells a story, while not very happy, but very effectively told!

Great place to visit, Dave, and nice documentation of this idyllic island! The one hoof on the way up was well timed for a little sense of motion!

I think the VRII is a major advantage when out there with the TC17. If I were using the 300 f/4 and TC17, it is unlikely that I could pull off this shot without tripod at 1/400.

Hi Kes! Thanks for commenting. The lighting of the rose stayed the same and only background changed. Maybe there was a bit of camera movement between takes. Someone has suggested that floral backgrounds should be dark. I don't see why and wonder what others may think.

Cool find, Dave! The mix of red and green is always dramatic. Exposure is great and good focus and detail on the primary subject.

I think you made it work nicely. I would have been tempted to use a polarizer, but you did great taking advantage of the glare!

Shirley, I so much admire your composites! So creative and so much more than using the latest filters! Bird of Paradise, indeed and very convincing!

I did look up the SCTOPHAGA STERCORARIA, and learned why it was not necessary to find dung in the vicinity. It seems that the larvae feed on the dung, whereas the adult is predatory of other flies! From the behaviours I observed, they almost seemed to "pounce" with those long legs rather than fly to make their attack! Interesting! Thanks again, Ernie!

Thanks for the ID, Ernie! I really appreciate it. Unfortunately no farms are in the neighbourhood. But then I would think the flies travel a bit! There are some horses a mile or so away.

You are right about the noise being a limiting factor with the D200. Although the D300 is a bit better, I still run into that wall! I would really like to use the D700, but, then would need a 600mm lens, which I can neither afford nor carry around. This is a struggle we can't win! As is often quoted, "photography is a compromise!"

Nice job, Andre! You handled the blacks as well as possible and hold great detail throughout! The 300mm f/4 is a great lens. I often use it with a TC 1.7, but usually at f/8 of f/11. Now that I have a TC 1.4, I look forward to trying wide open, as you have done!

Thank you, Shirley! They do come through in flocks, but that is only a winter pattern, the birds being rather inconspicuous in the summer.

Thanks for your comment, Andre! I have had limited experience with the lens and am just learning. It has taken a few weeks to get used to the size and heft. I guess for the price, I had better like it! It was a matter of only affording one exotic, so I chose the one with the most versatility, since I am a fairly eclectic photographer. I made the right compromise as far as I'm concerned. Superb lens - this is the new VRII version!

Hi Shirley! Thanks for your comment! At photo club judging, cluttered background and particularly, bright highlights in the background are not tolerated well. I am sure you have encountered this pattern. What I tried to do is to include the backdrop of Spring Beauties, yet still cause them to recede enough to not compete with the main subject. I am not entirely confident that I have succeeded. Would you advise that I remove some of the white highlights around the main bloom?
