Look it up online, there's plenty of info on levels and how to use them.

Thanks Mark, I appreciate your critique very much. I wrestled with this already, and did play with the contrast (maybe its my computer)but find with higher contrast you alter the depth between objects due to the loss of detail. I do like your blacker blacks though. How do I achieve this while preserving detail? your humble student, Gustave Gustave

Gus, Great shot. More contrast would make the blacks blacker and, I think, improve the photo. Here's the result of just a quick change in photoshop.

I like the seriousness of the expression. The hands in the center of the attention are a nice touch, somehow they remind me that "thining is work". Great shot!
