I really like this. I love pictures with people in their natural unedited, unposed, daily lives, as if you were really there. Well seen.

Thank you for your input, much appreciated. I hate writing on any of my pictures, but this was part of a national campaign here in SA. The black and white loses the drama of the flimsy materials these people use. Incidently, this camp burned down three months after I took the shot and left 500 people homeless. Karl

Karl: This is a well done photograph. My only thought was that the writing on it is distracting in that spot and at that size. Initially, I looked at it as being better in black and white, but a quick check proved that you were correct, this shot is much better at conveying the scene in color. Nicely done journalism shot.

Hello Karl, great composition with the B&W and colours!! Very well done my friend!
ps: thank you very much for visiting my portfolio and commenting my pictures. I´m not a master in B&W, but I´m trying... I love the nostalgic that we can reach with a good B&W roll film! Thank you again my friend!!

Hi Karl,
I really like the irony here - is she getting ready for a big night out? I also like the use of both monochrome and color. Very clever image.

Hi Karl, I can think of three ideas here, two in the field and one in post proccessing.
1) Use graduated neutral density filters. (ND Grads) You might be already familiar with them. They will darken the covered area of the lens (usually the lighter sky) by .6 to 2 or 3 whole stops. This wouldn't increase contrast, but would help to avoid blown out skies & backgrounds.
2) Take multiple exposures & mask them together in PS. Several darker exposures could have been taken, and then masked over the top of the photo in PS. This would improve, but also wouldn't increase contrast dramatically.
3) Adjustment layer in PS. Using masked adjustment layers in PS to increase saturation and contrast in the top region.
See the example attached.

I battled with the sky - shot could only work at noon, so I worked with the yellow as much as possible. Tried again with late afternoon light, but the yellow was not true. This shot was part of a comission by Canola farmer, so the yellow was vital. In general I have a problem with the sky here in South Africa - the contrasts gets me regularly. Any suggestions ?
