Seems to me that not only is the photo a commentary on the status of society today... particularly the "next generation", but so are the comments made by the young people.

Personally, I think it's a sad commentary. It's sad to think that this is the next generation of "leaders".

As far as the photo goes, the gentleman's face seems to be the only one that's properly exposed. The kid on the left is definitely "blown out" and the kid on the right, while not bad, is a little bit dark.

As far as composition (which, by the way, contributes to the technical "merit" of any photograph), it seems to me that what has been interpreted as a commentary on today's society is not at all what you intended to capture. It looks like a bunch of kids, out having fun at other people's expense, who happen to have a camera along for snapshots. In other words... I doubt you were trying to portray your friends (and your generation) in such a bad way. I think you were just out goofing around, doing what you always do, and thought this was funny.... which in itself is a sad commentary.

Ryan,

Very controversial image you got here. I personally do not advocate the exploitation of homeless people. Nevertheless, I am wondering why you posted this image here. I am pretty certain you realize that this site is to share and comment on creative photography. Your subject matter: If you want people to look at your image without giving you a biased opinion based on you being an evil person for taking advantage of an innocent person, then your image must be executed damn well. Then the only thing people can say is.. "man, this image is beautifully printed" and then can they look at your work seriously and what you are trying to convey.

On the other hand, you might think that this photo is cool, who knows. But the image does not tell me anything; more than it does leave an impression of you as the photographer.

If you want to engage the audience, you will need to do more than just point your camera and shoot at what goes on daily within your life.

This image does now "comment on today's society and what it has become." It is just a image of three people stajndign around. The exposure, composition are weak and could be stronger. Beyond the blowwn out highlights ont eh left and the distracting white bag, the relationships within the image are not clear. In other wrds, there is no message here "comment on today's society and what it has become." This could have been much beter if you stepped back from the voyeuristisc gaze you have here and got an image that betrayed the outward positions of three drunks of varying social standing and put it in some sort fo larger, more meaningful context. The question is how to do this? The first part is to spend more time and move beyond the grab shot. Doing this will get you a whole host of shots from which to edit and the ability to see what the realtionship are here, and work out the compositional and expsoure issues.

Yes Pete was wrong but Ryan is getting very close to being worse. Ryan, don't let yourself come to others level. You tookl a good picture but others don't like the content, well that is ok not everyone will like your work. Just cool down and go shoot some more shots.

Aaron - Yes this is a critique website. There for telling someone that there picture is wrong and that they should kick themself in the ass isn't a critique. Pete was downright WRONG to say that comment.

I agree with the earlier comments...definately shows what's happened to society nowadays. I wouldn't say this picture, "rules", but it definately sends a message. Take it easy, Ryan. It may be a website...but it's also a critique and help website. You submit your photos for those two things, and to share them with the world. If you're not able to take criticism, you might want to think again.

Why so much hate? So I guess it gets a low rating because you don't like the point. What about the fact it's a good picture? Or the fact that Justin's wig is rediculously 80's? This picture rules!

This is a good candid, and a social comment.I don't get the rates( '1' after 8 ratings !!)It is not as if the photographer is in any way resposible for the scene, and pictures can't always be of beautiful sunsets.

This image is sure to push some peoples buttons, already has. Emotions aside, I think the kid on the left is blown out as well as the bag. Agree with Chris that it is a strong commentary on our society, welcome to the real world.

Hello Ryan
So you panned the camera while using a slowish film - well I'll try that thank you - hope it turns out as effective as yours did! I'll let you know!

hey lynn I didnt use a filter at all, but to do this shot it was just ther speed of film and the app... I moved the camera while taking it and it came out like that.

Tell me - did you use a speed filter for this shot while the subject was statiionary? I'm interested to know because I have tried something very similar but it wasn't as effective as this one of yours. Please tell me the technique used, as I'm doing an 'action & movement' module and this sort of shot would fit in very well. Well done!
